[Covers and Tribvtes VI] - "96 tears"

Too many teardrops... for one heart... to be cryin'...
Too many teardrops... for one heart... to carry on...

96 tears is a classic garage-rock song from 1966. The original version is by "? & The Mysterians" (yes, the name of the leadsinger is ?). On the video above you can check they performing it in 1998.

They keyboard riff is one of the most catchy ever so it's no surprise the song was extensively covered by a whole lot of different bands. From the famous Strangles punky cover to Aretha Franklin's soul version.

My favourite version is the hardrock/bluesy version by a band called Gerardo Manuel & El Humo. I had never heard of this guy before but they knock it off pretty well in an anthemic way.

So, here they are, fifteen versions of ninety six tears.

1. Question Mark And The Mysterians - 96 Tears (2:56)
2. Cramps - 96 Tears (2:18)
3. The Pretty Things'n Mates - 96 Tears (2:59)
4. Inspiral Carpets - 96 Tears (2:39)
5. Suicide - 96 Tears (Live At Cbgb's) (3:48)
6. PRIMAL SCREAM - 96 Tears (2:55)
7. Todd Rundgren - 96 Tears (Froggy Went A Pumpkin) (3:08)

  1. Taken one at a time,these are a blast.
    I have a mp3 cd-rom with 100 covers of
stairway to heaven,& one can only take so many at once, altho most are very good.
That seems to be the case for me with this post.
    In moderation,it's wonderful.

  2. I have enough problems hearing the original Stairway to Heaven even once.

Hearing 100 covers of it is my perfect idea of HELL.

(the Frank Zappa's version is pretty cool though)
