Pogo - Children movies into Lounge

Pogo is the pseudonymus of a musician who mixes sounds from children well-known movies (like Mary Poppins and HarryPotter) into great lounge and jazzy tunes.

In this download, I've put 6 of his tracks that are favourites of mine. But you can hear the rest on

My two favourites are Expialidocious(the one from the video right below) and Scrumdiddlyumptious. Just listen to these two, m'kay?

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else (1958)

"hey dudeess... i dawnloaded a record from yer blog and it was all like jazz and stuff!!! waddafuk, are you gay or sumthin?? lol fags"

Ok. Bearing that in mind, let's move on.

"When alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley culled together this quartet, he grabbed three champions from seemingly disparate schools to complement his flinty solos: Miles Davis, the king of cool; Art Blakey, the thundering force of hard bop; Hank Jones, a veteran of swing; and Sam Jones, a versatile bassist adaptable to nearly any setting. The results are one of Blue Note's most beloved albums. The midtempo title track provides the centerpiece of this classic as Adderley echoes Miles's swaggering melody before both unravel wonderful solos. A must-have Blue Note album. --John Murph"

Eddy Current Supression Ring - Primary Colours (2008)

I haven't heard to many australian bands in my life but Eddy Current is definitely my favourite one to have come out of the kangaroo island in the last decade.

Even though they aren't trying to create new rock tendencies, and, instead, are doing the good old garage rock thing with some bits of punk and rocknroll, they do it so well that every song here is a winner.

Colour Television is definitely my favourite. You can't go wrong when you use hypnotic-repeating bass riffs.

1- Memory Lane
2- Sunday's Coming
3- Wrapped Up
4- Colour Television
5- That's inside of Me

Lilys - The 3 Way (1999)'s Best of 1999:
"The Lilys' music will instantly remind you of a handful of classic organ- and guitar-heavy combos from the '60s, but they're wholly unlike any other retro outfit on earth. Theirs is an alternate vision of '60s psychedelia. Neither pretentious nor full of itself, the stuff totally rocks, Nuggets-style, in spite of the disjointed lyrics and way-complicated song structures. --Mike McGonigal"

I love this record. My favourite 60's ripoff album ever. If you like The Kinks or Beatles, give it a listen.

Adam Green - Gemstones (2005)

"Musically, Adam Green is a pop craftsman par excellence. He seems to be a very gifted student of pop music's vast and intricate rule book. Thus his music is not especially original in any way, though often sophisticated, tuneful, and clever. On Gemstones, the third and best of his solo albums, Green seems to have perfected his art. Some of the tracks here rank among the finest pop songs that are made these days. There's the wonderfully melancholic ballads such as "Losing on a Tuesday" and "Before My Bedtime". There's the catchy and fun, almost '50s-styled rock & roll such as single "Emily," while "Carolina" is another slice of wonderful cabaret pop, and on "Over the Sunrise" he suddenly goes all Jim Morrison on you. In other words, there's something for everyone here. In fact, all 15 tracks have strong musical qualities. An unusually strong, well-produced album of classic songwriting."

Bob Dylan - Rolling Thunder Revue (1975)

Undoubtely the best Dylan live album to me. The Rolling Thunder Revue was a famous concert tour assembled by Bob himself in 1975. These series of shows are notorious for having the mose intense versions of some songs (see Isis video below for example) and great guest musicians(Joan Baez, Roger Mcguinn from The Byrds and others).

The Rolling Thunder Revue culminated with the release of Desire, in early 1976, that, to many and to myself, is one of the best albuns in Dylan's career.

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady (1963)

"This 1963 recording occupies a special place in Mingus's work, his most brilliantly realized extended composition. The six-part suite is a broad canvas for the bassist's tumultuous passions, ranging from islands of serenity for solo guitar and piano to waves of contrapuntal conflict and accelerating rhythms that pull the listener into the musical psychodrama. This is one of the greatest works in jazz composition, and it's remarkable that Mingus dredged this much emotional power from a group of just 11 musicians." --Stuart Broomer

Gang Of Four - Entertainment!

It's a great entertainment!
Obvious joke is obvious.

Entertainment! is one of those records where germs of influence can be traced through many genres and countless bands, both favorably and unfavorably. From groups whose awareness of genealogy spreads wide enough to openly acknowledge Gang of Four's influence (Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine), to those not in touch with their ancestry enough to realize it (rap-metal, some indie rock) -- all have appropriated elements of their forefathers' trailblazing contribution. Its vaguely funky rhythmic twitch, its pungent, pointillistic guitar stoccados, and its spoken/shouted vocals have all been picked up by many. Lyrically, the album was apart from many of the day, and it still is.

Killing Joke - Fire Dances (1983)

In 1982, Killing Joke almost split up because their lead singer, Jaz Coleman started reading stuff related to occultism and Aleister Crowley. I don't know what's up with rock stars and Crowley's philosophy, but the two always find a way to get together.

Anyways, Jaz Coleman got convinced that the apocalypse was coming really fast and he disappeared to Iceland, where - he thought - he would be safe, because it is written in the Bible: "And then the Judgement Day shall come - and no creature shall receive My mercy. Pain shall be spread all around the earth. Except in Iceland, of course, who I like so much."

Waiting for the apocalypse is quite boring, though. So the rest of the band decided to fly to Iceland too and record a tribal post-punk album drenched in communist lyrics and great guitarwork. And It's darn good.

Music Machine - Beyond The Garage

This is one of my other favourite bands from the 60's garage movement. They made a very original sound that combined the traditional amateurish protopunk sound with very werid time signatures and strange riffs, to quote Mark Prindle: "their songs are WeIrD! I mean wEiRd! I mean WEird! weIRD! WeirD! wEIRd! WeiRd! wEIrD! God, the potential permutations are ENDLESS!!!!"

Although nearly every song here is top-notch, it may require a few more listens than usual to get you acquainted with their strange sound. Suffice to say they were leaded by THIS man:

"Mean sideburns and leather gloves, babe."

The Monkees - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, LTD. (1967)

I'll quote Mark Prindle again because I'm at work right now and I better finish this post quick or boss will catch me "hangin' round", like the song in this album says.

"Bullshit entertainment doesn't get much better than this! Screw Monkee input - Nesmith contributes a ridiculous "psychedelic" song and a wonderful lounge pop number, but the other guys don't do jack! Just oodles and oodles of fantastic tracks contributed by outside writers. You've probably only ever heard "Pleasant Valley Sunday," but you need to hear the rest. More Beatle guitar rock, moog pop, country, tapdance shimmy - hooahh! Even the Davy stuff is great! No ballads from Mr. Jones! What a great record. Buy it a lot! If it had "Last Train To Clarksville," it'd be darn near perfect!"

Blue Cheer - Outside Inside (1968)

One of my favourite hard-psychedelic albuns ever. I'll quote the words of the sage George Starostin to help me out:

"This must be the worst production on any album I've ever heard. In fact, the first impression from this bunch of messy, disconnected, dissonant, rambling "songs" is that every single member of the band filled his innards with as much bourbon as possible, then avidly threw up on every single instrument and gadget, then recorded the album without even bothering to clear the vomit out of the speakers. Or something to that effect. The guitars are constantly out of tune, the drummer is constantly out of synch, and the volume level gives a very vivid impression of a busy groundhog merrily chewing on the knobs for lack of a better source of nutrition. Now d'ya get the picture?"

Primus - Sailing The Seas of Cheese (1991)

Sailing the Seas of Cheese is the second album and major-label debut by Primus, released on July 2, 1991.

Sailing the Seas of Cheese was Primus' breakthrough album, spawning singles "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "Tommy the Cat", and fan favorites such as "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers" and "American Life".

This album displays more funk influence than its predecessor Frizzle Fry and is somewhat more dissonant. It stresses world and political issues, such as a negative depiction of military life ("Sgt. Baker"), awareness of people living in poverty ("American Life"), being an outcast ("Eleven"), and the use of crystal meth amongst low-income workers ("Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers"). "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" contains a sample from the movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 where the character 'Chop Top' exclaims "Dog will hunt!". "Los Bastardos" contains three samples from the BBC TV series The Young Ones of Vyvyan shouting "Shut up you bastards!", and two of Rick saying, "You just called me a bastard, didn't you?", and "Mike, you bastard!".

Golden Throats vol.1

Golden Throats Vol.1 - The Great Celebrity Sing Off.

Another "terrible covers by famous artists" compilation. This is the legendary one, though. The first one to deal with this nasty subject.

This album is like a serial killer making hostages in a primary school and slowly tearing up the pieces of little children. That's not even a metaphor, I mean that literally! For example, Sebastian Cabot's cover of "It Ain't Me Babe" is just dreadful, I don't even have words to describe what I feel for the people who actually recorded this shit.

"Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds"? Worthy of death penalty.
"House of the Rising Sun"? Heresy.

My favourite in dreadfulness is Mr. Tambourine Man, though. I don't know how to demonstrate the amount of horror in this version but showing you a picture of the guy who's singing(yes, he was a member of Star Trek):

"Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me."

1 - Leonard Nimoy - Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
2 - Sebastian Caboy - It Ain't me Babe (Bob Dylan)
3 - Eddie Albert - Blowin' in The wind (Bob Dylan)
4 - William Shatner - Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds (Beatles)
5 - Noel Harrison - A Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum)
6 - Frankie Randall - I Can See For Miles (The Who)
7 - Jack Webb - Try a Little Tenderness (?)
8 - Mae West - Twist and Shout (famously recorded by The Beatles)
9 - Andy Griffith - House of The Rising Sun (Traditional?)
10 - William Shatner - Mr. Tambourine Man (Bob Dylan)
11 - Jim Nabors - You Are The Sunshine of My Life (?)

Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles (1993)

Mark Prindle's review of the album(which got a 10 in his rating system):
The coolest. The tempo-halting harmonic "gleeng gloong!"s in "Thermal Treasure," the queasy axe meanderings of a solo Mr. Ash in "My Kimono," the harmonic-laden rat-a-tat-a-tat chorus in "Sure Shot," the pick-tapping-string solos in "Stinger (Five Wigs)," the high-energy guitar swoops and clachunkas in "Action Vs. Vibe" (action wins by a longshot), the smash-em-up count-to-fives that close "Gemini Cusp" - crud, dude - these fellows had their thinking caps on. To rock so handily, yet screw around with the accepted usages of normal pop instruments and structure to such a degree: them Polvos, they's some thinking fellers!
Sonic in their youth, too!
Bad company? Polvo refuses to repeat itself, trying new styles and methods of play with each release. This one's my favorite because I feel like they offer up a slightly larger number of brilliant ideas in these ten songs than they do on any of their other records. Among the songs I haven't already mentioned, "Tilebreaker" is straight-ahead indie rock like on the debut EP, "Time Isn't On My Side" is a herky-jerky keyboard-driven toe-tapper, "Shiska" is short and punky like Glenn Danzig before the accident, and "Lazy Comet" goes from stupid kiddie singalong to unsteady lightweight destructo-change-o in less time than it takes for me to turn the volume up really really loud whenever that genius Sheryl Crow song "If It Makes You Happy" comes on the air - aww now you're speaking my language in the upstairs room. I love this album, this band, and my girlfriend, and I suggest you do the same.
Except for my girlfriend. Asshole.

03 - My Kimono

05 - Stinger (five wigs)

The Seeds - Discography

At the same day Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett died, also died one of the key figures in the underground of rock n' roll of all times: Mr. Sky Saxon, vocalist and leader of The Seeds.

The Seeds is one of the most cherished (and obscure) bands of the 60's garagerock movement. They are mainly known by their two hits: Can't Seem to Make You Mine(that the Ramones covered) and Pushin' Too Hard(one of the friggin best rock songs of all times).

At first sight, they might seem a bit repetitive or amateurish, but if you turn your volume loud enough and, to quote one of their songs, "let yourself go": you'll understand why Jesvs Cristvs has such a special love for this band.

They released 3 main studio albuns. Two rough-and-straight garagerock records in 1966 and a hilarious attempt of sounding psychedelic(that i'm-not-sure-how worked!) in 1967.

1966 - The Seeds
Highlights: Pushin' Too Hard, No Escape and Evil Hoodoo. The three songs are basically the same but they all rock hard enough to transcend plagium. Can't Seem to Make you Mine is great too.

1966 - Web of Sound
Definitely the stupendou Up In Her Room, a 14-minute jam with ONE CHORD. Marvelous, one of my favourite songs ever.

1967 - Future

Flower Lady and Her Assistance and Fallin'. It's hilarious how they try to sound psychedelic but end sounding so amateurish that the record turns out to be great.

Ween - The Mollusk (1997)

.............Good Lord, that's a hard album to summarize.
Ween are a wonderful duo that started creating weird joke-tunes in 1990. Releasing a bunch of very good and diverse albuns, they finally reached their creativity peak in 1997, with this album: The Mollusk.

.............It's hard to say if those songs are joke-songs or serious. For example, "The Blarney Stone" emulates a pirate drinking song, "Mutilated Lips" is a spooky-ballad with a dark tone, "Buckingham Green" sounds like a 70's progressive rock song, "Waving my Dick in The Wind" is... well... it talks about waving a guy named Dick in the wind. I'm not sure what that means, though. gave it a 10. George Starostin gave it a 10. Allmusic gave it 4,5 stars.

Secret Chiefs 3

This is one of the most amazing bands I've discovered this whole year.
The thing is they aren't just one band, but at least 7 different bands recording under the same name(and a weird one): Secret Chiefs 3.

It's unbelievable how they can play so many different musical styles and mix them together in individual albums. "Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws", from 1998, for example, starts with a classical piece, jumps to a Surf-rock craze and a few minutes later you'll be listening to Arabic-Persian music with electric guitars.

"Book M" goes in the same vein, with lyrics rambling about Hinduism and Mysticism, they manage to put Death-metal near to Indian music followed by Ennio Morricone-like songs and electronica experiments.

"Traditionalists: Le Mani DeStre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini" is a different record, though. It doesn't contain all the bands that form SC3 but only one of them: Traditionalists. The whole concept of this album is amazing: it's a fake soundtrack to an italian horror movie that doesn't exist. If you like B-Horror Movies, you'll love this.

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra - Government Magic

Do you know Afrobeat? This term was coined back in the 70's in Africa, the style is probably the better thing Africa has ever created recently. It combines FUNK and JAZZ with african tribal rhytms and the result is an hypnotic dancing groove that will make your mind blow.
Antibalas is a great afrobeat contemporary band from the USA. The guys take all those african influences(specially Fela Kuti) and give it an americanized charm.
This video will show a bit of how is their sound:

Rough Guide to Indonesia

Like most releases in the Rough Guide series, this compilation provides a solid overview of the music of a particular region, but Indonesia's musical traditions are probably among the least well-known in the West. World music aficionados may be familiar with the gamelan orchestras for which the region has become known, but this 15-song CD exposes the broad diversity of sounds you might expect from a country with over 550 ethnic groups spread across more than 17,500 islands. From the traditional gamelan and throbbing percussion of CBMW's folksy "Sambasunda" and the lilting guitar picking and melancholy vocals of Grup Bamba Puang's "Los Quin Tallu-Tallu" to the more modern, Indian- and Arabic-influenced pop sounds of artists like Elvy Sukaesih and her former partner, Rhoma Irama, The Rough Guide to Indonesia provides an accessible introduction to some very unfamiliar musical traditions.

Golden Throats Vol. 4: Celebrities Butcher Songs of The Beatles

Following the success of our last post(the bizarre cover versions of On The Rocks Pt.1), I now present to you another pearl of musical failure: Golden Throats Vol.4 - Celebrities Butcher Songs of The Beatles.

Who would be dumb enough to mix the theme from Mission:Impossible with Norwegian Wood?! A cover of Michelle sang by a dutch prostitute?! Joe Pesci singing Beatles?!? A ridiculous dramatic interpretation of Lucy in The Sky? "Don't Let me Down" sang by a girl who probably killed a man?

Only a few of these covers are extremely bad, they are beatles songs afterall. As bad as these singers are, it's almost impossible to make a bad song out of a Beatles one. In that sense, we got to praise Telly Savalas for managing to transform Something into a kitschy sugary mess that would make even Jesus cringe.

............................Congratulations, Telly. You're the man.

Ultralounge - On The Rocks pt.1

This extremely FUNNY compilation ensembles the most bizarre and stupid covers ever made by well-known artists of famous rock classics. Most of these tunes are ridiculous easylistening versions of classics like "Light My Fire" or "A Hard Day's Night" directed towards the more square and conservative public.
Some versions are extremely laughable(Light my fire, Dylan's Quinn the Eskimo, Kink's Tired of Waiting For You) and some are even interesting(A sitar version of the Monkee's Daydream Believer).

Ps: Thanks a lot to Bishop, for helping me finding some band names. And how funny is the fact that a man named Bishop helps a blog named Jesvs Cristvs? Gee.

Os Mutantes - Discografia/Discography

What can I say about this absolutely fantastic band besided it is quasi-unanimously considered the best rock band from Brazil?

Some people even pair up their albuns with the Beatles's. If that doesn't make you feel curious, I guess nothing will.

1968 - Mutantes

1969 - Os Mutantes

1970 - A Divina Comédia (ou Ando Meio Desligado)

1971 - Jardim Elétrico

1972 - E os cometas no país dos Baurets

A Joe Strummer Tribute

As a great fan of The Clash and Joe Strummer, I decided to make this post in the honor of his birthday that's coming August 21th. After the breakup of the band, Strummer began trying to find his true self again, the true self he had lost in the past years with the Clash. In that period he wrote a bunch of soundtracks for movies. In 1999, in an attempt to come back to real music, Strummer creates Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. Jesvs Cristvs has uploaded two albums from this band and another two CD's of his soundtracks just for you, my faithful brother!

These first 2 albums are just some of the good and old rock'n'roll at Strummer's style.

Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil

One of the best brazilian albuns, surely one TOP10 record for my beloved country.
Jorge Ben mix samba with rock, funk with african music, mysticism with umbanda, and everything he could possibly imagine at the time. The result is such a colorful and fantastic experience that even Rod Stewart(yes, THAT Rod Stewart) has plagiarized one of his songs("Taj Mahal") in his song "Da Ya Think Im Sexy". As a result of the lawsuit, Stewart agreed to donate all his royalties from the song to UNICEF.
If you're interested in discovering Brazilian music, this record is a perfect start.
