[Cover and Tribvtes XI] Ian Dury Tribute - Brand New Boots and Panties

After Ian Dury's death in 2000, some artists and musicians gathered themselves up to record a tribute album to the fallen one. The album name mocks that of Ian Dury's classic 1977 record: "New Boots and Panties!!!".

Among the people who appeared to record this tribute are Sinead O'connor, the british guys from Madness, the beautiful Shane MacGowan and, to the surprise of everyone: Sir Paul McCartney!

How the hell did the ex-beatle happen to be here, I'm not sure, but his version of "Partial to your Abracadabra" is probably the best thing he has ever done since 1973.

1. Sinead O'Connor With The Blockheads - Wake Up And Make Love With Me (4:58)
2. Robbie Williams and The Blockheads - Sweet Gene Vincent (4:07)
3. Paul McCartney & The Blockheads - I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra (3:31)
4. Madness - My Old Man (3:13)
5. Billy Brag And The Blokes - Billericay Dickie (4:43)
6. Wreckless Eric and The Blockheads - Clevor Trever (6:15)
7. Cerys Matthews and The Blockheads - If I Was With A Woman (3:34)

8. Grant Nicholas and The Blockheads - Blockheads (4:07)
9. Shane MacGowan and The Blockheads - Plaistow Patricia (4:03)
10. Keith Allen and The Blockheads - Blackmail Man (2:14)

On an unrelated note, this is the 100th post of the blog. And today is 10/10. And this album has 10 songs. And right now is, according to my watch: 10:00am. That means something, right? Any Inca prophecies?

[Covers and Tribvtes VIII] Señor Coconut Y su Conjunto - Fiesta songs & Autobahn

[Covers and Tribvtes III] Bryan Ferry - Dylanesque (2007)

Great news, everyone!
Noel Gallagher, from Oasis, was kind enough to send us a quick message. Noel has been a follower of the site since its beginning back in 1997. Noel and Liam always kept close contact with the website. In 2002, Jesvs Cristvs was the first website to broadcast their hit single "The Hindu Times", even before mTV.com.

Noel's message:

Thanks a lot, mate!

On an unrelated note, this is Bryan Ferry's (ex lead-singer from Roxy Music) album from 2007: Dylanesque. It comprises of eleven covers of Bob Dylan.

Ferry is a pretty talented folk, and these versions are all really interesting. The album sold quite well back then and even scored a Top 10 in the UK and in Sweden(like someone would care about Sweden's top charts).

All tracks composed by Bob Dylan:
  1. "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" – 3:50
  2. "Simple Twist of Fate" – 5:18
  3. "Make You Feel My Love" – 3:22
  4. "The Times They Are a-Changin'" – 3:40
  5. "All I Really Want to Do" – 2:29
  6. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" – 6:13
  7. "Positively Fourth Street" – 3:45
  8. "If Not for You" – 2:40
  9. "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" – 2:13
  10. "Gates of Eden" – 5:12
  11. "All Along the Watchtower" – 3:46

[Covers and Tribvtes - I] Rush - Feedback (2004)

From wikipedia.com:
"Feedback is a studio EP by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 2004. The album features eight covers of songs that were influential for the band members during the 1960's."

Great versions by a band I've never been a big fan of. "For What It's Worth" is still one of the best songs ever written.
  1. "Summertime Blues" (Eddie Cochran, arr. by Blue Cheer/The Who) – 3:43
  2. "Heart Full of Soul" (Graham Gouldman, arr. by The Yardbirds) – 2:52
  3. "For What It's Worth" (Stephen Stills, arr. by Buffalo Springfield) – 3:30
  4. "The Seeker" (Pete Townshend, arr. by The Who) – 3:27
  5. "Mr. Soul" (Neil Young, arr. by Buffalo Springfield) – 3:51
  6. "Seven and Seven Is" (Arthur Lee, arr. by Love) – 2:53
  7. "Shapes of Things" (The Yardbirds) – 3:16

Yoko Ono - Between My Head and Sky (2009)

When I was just a kid who thought Yoko Ono is no more than the "Woman who broke the Beatles apart", this one fellow came in and showed me how wrong I was.

Very few people know how incredible this japanese lady is. Besides being a very well-known artist since early fifties (when John Lennon was still wearing diapers), and a very special musician, Yoko has already proved to be a wonderful and very humble person. Difficult qualities for musicians, these days.

To record Between My Hand and Sky, Yoko regrouped with the Plastic Ono Band and Sean Lennon. The result is one of her more accesible albuns. It has rocknroll, funk, moving ballads and electronic goofiness.

I wouldn't know about all this, if it wasn't for this old fellow of mine. Today is a special day for him, and this post goes as a homage.

1. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Waiting For The D Train (2:48)
2. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - The Sun Is Down (4:50)
3. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Ask The Elephant (3:04)
4. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Memory Of Footsteps (3:16)
5. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Moving Mountains (2:54)
6. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Calling (4:19)
7. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Healing (4:24)
8. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Hashire, Hashire (3:35)

Easy Star Allstars - The Dub Side of the Moon (2003)

The other famous Easy Star Allstar's dub-reggae parody. Pink Floyd goes rhastafari and it sounds great.

Notable changes from the original album (taken from wikipedia.com):
  • The cash register opening and closing on "Money" is changed to a man lighting a bong, the bong being ripped, and the man coughing.
  • A cuckoo clock is added to the clocks at the beginning of "Time", as is a digital clock, a rooster, and "Reveille" being played on a trumpet.
  • Several of the songs feature extensive improvisation over the instrumentals.
Track listing:
  1. "Speak to Me & Breathe" (Sluggy Ranks)
  2. "On the Run"
  3. "Time" (Corey Harris & Ranking Joe)
  4. "The Great Gig in the Sky" (Kirsty Rock)
  5. "Money" (Gary "Nesta" Pine & Dollarman)
  6. "Us and Them" (Frankie Paul)
  7. "Any Colour You Like"
  8. "Brain Damage" (Dr Israel)
  9. "Eclipse" (The Meditations)

Easy Star Allstars - Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009)

After famously covering Pink Floyd(I'll post this one tomorrow) and Radiohead, the infamous dub-reggae band goes to cover the biggest record of them all: the Beatles's Sgt. Pepper.

The whole thing is fantastic, even though they are just having a lot of fun, some of these covers even approach what is commonly referred as ART.

There is no bad song here, I mean, if you like REGGAE and DUB, because that's what it is. I was really worried about how would the "Within Without You" cover sound like, though. When I heard it, boy, was I surprised or what? It's GRATE! What about the "She's Leaving Home" version, then?

1. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" ft. Junior Jazz
2. "With a Little Help from My Friends" ft. Luciano
3. "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" ft. Frankie Paul
4. "Getting Better" ft. The Mighty Diamonds
5. "Fixing a Hole (Extended Dub Mix)" ft. Max Romeo
6. "She's Leaving Home" ft. Kirsty Rock
7. "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" ft. Ranking Roger
8. "Within You Without You" ft. Matisyahu
9. "When I'm Sixty-Four (Extended Dub Mix)" ft. Sugar Minott
10. "Lovely Rita" ft. Bunny Rugs & U-Roy
11. "Good Morning Good Morning" ft. Steel Pulse

Medeski, Martin & Wood - End Of The World Party (Just In Case) (2004)

From some fellow on rateyourmusic.com:

"End of the World Party (Just in Case) might just prove to be MMW's best studio effort to date.

The first three tracks have a vibe/mood to them that succinctly matches the title of the album: dark, eery, spooky, and ominous, all fueled by exceptional use of Medeski's mellotron and synthesizers. The remaining songs offer more variety, from a latinesque and jazzy "Mami Gato" to a middle eastern tinged "Bloody Oil" powered by some deep bass work by Chris Wood to the soulful "New Planet" or "Queen Bee", which reminds me of the soundtrack to a 70's detective television show. MMW's cohort in musical exploration, guitar virtuoso Marc Ribot, adds flavor and texture to the album on a few tracks, as do Steven Bernstein and Briggan Krauss on horn, while the production was led by John King of the Dust Brothers.

This album is an absolute must have for MMW fans and lovers of creative music. All three are at the top of their masterful game. Beware this album will be hard to remove from your cd player!"

The Go! Team - Proof of Youth(2007) and Thunder Lightining Strike (2004)

Even though at first they may sound a bit TOO poppy and indiey, they are great, believe me. If you can stand excessively happy music, you'll love them like I do.

The key factor is that they represent very well the London cultural miscigenation, for example, their leadsinger is a black rapper Ninja. They also have a japanese singer who acts like they're recording an anime soundtrack. And the main songwriter is Ian Parton, who loves 70's blackexploitation music and spy movies.

The final result is not a mess, and instead, one of the most interesing mixs of different styles I've ever heard. If you don't like the video for Doing It Right below, try listening to another of their songs on youtube.

Black Taj - Black Taj (2005)

Black Taj is the band the former members from Polvo created in early 00's in order to have freedom to pursuit new musical directions without being directly related to their old sound.

Well, like Polvo, Black Taj is also guitar-based. But, instead of indiesonicyouthesque music, you'll hear one of the best hardrock band that have come out in the last few years.

The relation to Led Zeppelin is obvious, and, at sometimes, even the guitars sound like taken off from a Zeppelin album, but, that's not a bad thing. On the contrary, it is one of the best thing about this album.

If you like Led Zeppelin and Sonic Youth, listen to this and you'll see what would their son sound like.

Stephen Malkmus - Stephen Malkmus (2001)

Stephen Malkmus is a former member of the indie-rock band Pavement. After the band disbanded, Malkmus went on to pursuit a solo career, and a very interesting one.

This is his first solo album and it sounds like pavement: creative and catchy indierock by un unquestionably talented fellow. Every song is good, believe me.

Eddy Current Supression Ring - Primary Colours (2008)

I haven't heard to many australian bands in my life but Eddy Current is definitely my favourite one to have come out of the kangaroo island in the last decade.

Even though they aren't trying to create new rock tendencies, and, instead, are doing the good old garage rock thing with some bits of punk and rocknroll, they do it so well that every song here is a winner.

Colour Television is definitely my favourite. You can't go wrong when you use hypnotic-repeating bass riffs.

2- Sunday's Coming
3- Wrapped Up
4- Colour Television
5- That's inside of Me

Adam Green - Gemstones (2005)

From allmusic.com:

"Musically, Adam Green is a pop craftsman par excellence. He seems to be a very gifted student of pop music's vast and intricate rule book. Thus his music is not especially original in any way, though often sophisticated, tuneful, and clever. On Gemstones, the third and best of his solo albums, Green seems to have perfected his art. Some of the tracks here rank among the finest pop songs that are made these days. There's the wonderfully melancholic ballads such as "Losing on a Tuesday" and "Before My Bedtime". There's the catchy and fun, almost '50s-styled rock & roll such as single "Emily," while "Carolina" is another slice of wonderful cabaret pop, and on "Over the Sunrise" he suddenly goes all Jim Morrison on you. In other words, there's something for everyone here. In fact, all 15 tracks have strong musical qualities. An unusually strong, well-produced album of classic songwriting."

2.Down On The Street – 2:07

Secret Chiefs 3

This is one of the most amazing bands I've discovered this whole year.
The thing is they aren't just one band, but at least 7 different bands recording under the same name(and a weird one): Secret Chiefs 3.

It's unbelievable how they can play so many different musical styles and mix them together in individual albums. "Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws", from 1998, for example, starts with a classical piece, jumps to a Surf-rock craze and a few minutes later you'll be listening to Arabic-Persian music with electric guitars.

"Book M" goes in the same vein, with lyrics rambling about Hinduism and Mysticism, they manage to put Death-metal near to Indian music followed by Ennio Morricone-like songs and electronica experiments.

"Traditionalists: Le Mani DeStre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini" is a different record, though. It doesn't contain all the bands that form SC3 but only one of them: Traditionalists. The whole concept of this album is amazing: it's a fake soundtrack to an italian horror movie that doesn't exist. If you like B-Horror Movies, you'll love this.

Secret Chiefs 3 doing their persian-arabic thing:

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra - Government Magic

Do you know Afrobeat? This term was coined back in the 70's in Africa, the style is probably the better thing Africa has ever created recently. It combines FUNK and JAZZ with african tribal rhytms and the result is an hypnotic dancing groove that will make your mind blow.
Antibalas is a great afrobeat contemporary band from the USA. The guys take all those african influences(specially Fela Kuti) and give it an americanized charm.

A Joe Strummer Tribute

As a great fan of The Clash and Joe Strummer, I decided to make this post in the honor of his birthday that's coming August 21th. After the breakup of the band, Strummer began trying to find his true self again, the true self he had lost in the past years with the Clash. In that period he wrote a bunch of soundtracks for movies. In 1999, in an attempt to come back to real music, Strummer creates Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. Jesvs Cristvs has uploaded two albums from this band and another two CD's of his soundtracks just for you, my faithful brother!

These first 2 albums are just some of the good and old rock'n'roll at Strummer's style.

Both sides of Sparks

Sparks were one of the best art-pop band of the seventhies releasing at least 4 masterpieces. They consist of the two Mael brothers, Ron(the one on the photo who carries that beautiful mustache for 30 years now) and Rusell. Ron writes the intricate melodies on the piano and Russell sings it.

I have to admit I don't listen to them much often now but they will always be one of my top 20 favourite bands. And they are very unknown, so, I didn't hesitate in making this wonderful compilation that will show to you the best of their two phases: The seventhies art-pop phase and their 2000's CLASSICAL-OPERA-POP-ROCK phase.

Have you ever thought about it how would Mozart sound if he wanted a top100 hit on the USA? Well, its exactly how the second phase Sparks sound.

Their lyrics are so goood that i've included a brief description after some song titles ahead, but, keep in mind that almost every song has hilarious lyrics:

DISC 1 - SEVENTHIES
1 - This Town ain't big enough for the both us
2 - Happy Hunting Ground
3 - At Home At Work At Play
4 - Here In Heaven
it's about a boy who kills himself after making a pact with his girlfriend. But she doesn't kills herself and he gets a bit angry.
5 - Thanks But no Thanks
it's about a little boy refusing drugs because his parents wouldn't let him.
6 - How Are You Getting Home
the guy wants to take the girl home just to make moves on her. naughty.
7 - Talent Is An Asset
it's about the child Albert Einstein.
8 - Equator
9 - Barbecutie
10 - Achoo
11 - Get in the Swing

DISC 2 - 00's
1 - Intro
2 - Perfume
It's about perfumes, mainly. Still hilarious, though.
3 - How Do I Get to Carnegie Hall
It's based on that famous joke about a tourist asking how to go to the famous theater carnegie hall: "How do i get do carnegie hall?", and the other guy answers: "Practice, man. Practice."
4 - Good Morning
5 - Metaphor
"A metaphor is a wonderful thing, girls dig dig D-I-G dig dig metaphors, use them wisely, use them well, and you'll never know the hell of loliness."
6 - Dick Around
7 - The Rhytm Thief
8 - Lighten Up, Morrissey
I'm not sure what is this about but it mentions the Smith's vocalist.
9 - My Baby's Taking me Home
His baby is taking him home. He mentions it a couple thousand times.
10 - Strange Animal
11 - Waterproof
12 - There's no Such thing as Aliens
