Squeeze - Cool For Cats (1979)

Two songs are the main reason for me posting this album here: Cool For Cats and Up The Junction. These two songs alone are worth all the trouble downloading the whole record.

Squeeze used to be a nice powerpop new-wavey band from the late seventies and early eighties. Their songs resemble those of XTC, Cheap Trick and other related bands.

But, enough of useless talk, today is saturday and it's already 21:00 o'clock. You're all already leaving to the nearest pub, so, I'll just leave you with these videos, take your conclusions by yourselves.

Cool For Cats (if there is any girl reading this blog, this is how you should dance, ok?)

Up The Junction (the quintessential perfect pop song?)

  1. "Slap and Tickle" – 4:01
  2. "Revue" – 2:30
  3. "Touching Me Touching You" – 2:25
  4. "It's Not Cricket" – 2:35
  5. "It's So Dirty" – 3:11
  6. "The Knack" – 4:34
  7. "Hop, Skip & Jump" – 2:46
  8. "Up the Junction" – 3:12
  9. "Hard to Find" – 3:37
  10. "Slightly Drunk" – 2:41
  11. "Goodbye Girl" – 2:59
  12. "Cool for Cats" – 3:29
  13. "I Must Go" – 2:16
  14. "Ain't It Sad" – 3:29

Beach Boys - Holland (1973)

It took me a long time to start loving this album. Everyone refers to this album as a minor piece in the Beach Boys's catalog. As usual, I strongly disagree.

Holland is beautiful. And It's not because you can smoke marijuana and have sex in the parks, but, because pretty much every song here is very good.

Sail on Sailor and Funky Pretty are the only Brian Wilson compositions on here, as far as I know. In 1973, Brian was still completely cuckoo and practically out of the band. It is funny, however, that my two favourite songs are his. Sail on Sailor is a gorgeous soul classic and Funky Pretty is the weirdest song on the album, and the catchiest too.

Some call it the Beach Boys's progressive rock album. It certainly does sound a bit prog in some places(there's a long synth solo on Leaving This Town, what the hell), but I wouldn't go this far and call this prog. These are the Beach Boys maturing and making complex, although still gorgeous, songs.

Brian Wilson having his favourite breakfast: The Beatles's Sgt. Pepper with jelly and toast.

Track listing:
1) Sail On Sailor;
2) Steamboat;
3) California Saga/Big Sur;
4) California Saga/The Beaks Of Eagles;
5) California Saga/California;
6) The Trader;
7) Leaving This Town;
8) Only With You;
9) Funky Pretty

The Doors - Soft Parade (1969)

The less talked-about Doors record. Undeservedly, in my opinion. I love how the band started making simple pop and blues songs. Where's the band who did "The End" and "When the Music is over" a couple years ago? Where's the band who's going to do "Riders on the storm" some years later?

Tell All the People and Touch Me are my favourites. The first one has Jim screaming as if he were a messiah. The second one, Touch Me, is a timeless classic, and I won't lose my time describing it: "Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, now touch me, baby!"

Track listing:

1) Tell All The People;
2) Touch Me;
3) Shaman's Blues;
4) Do It;
5) Easy Ride;
6) Wild Child;
7) Runnin' Blue;
8) Wishful Sinful;
9) The Soft Parade.

Los Shakers - La Conferencia Secreta Del Toto's Bar (1968)

Until you people start leaving comments on the albums you download, I will write all posts in hungarian. Yeah, that's how pissed off I am.

"Ez a legjobb pszichadelikus album én már hallott még a spanyol nyelven. Ez a Közösség és Uruguay volt dolga is fel kell oldani 1967, de kellő szerződéses kérdések, csak jöttek ki a 1968. Minden olyan dalokat angol, bár a címek kerülnek a spanyol.

Szép beatlesque jól, csodálatos horgok és néhány esetleges tangó eszközöket. Ha csak voltak a Anglia vagy az Amerikai Egyesült Államok, azok volna nagy."

1. Los Shakers - La Conferencia Secreta Del Toto's Bar / Mi Tía Clementina (5:07)
2. Los Shakers - Candombe (3:13)

The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta (1980)

Ok, so I'm sick of receiving the same complaints over and over again.
"Why do you only post heterossexual music?"; "Are you people homophobic?"; "Where's gay music??"

For the last time: We are not homophobics. We like gay people a lot! We have always supported the gay movement. My dog is gay!

And to prove our gay-friendliness and open-mind, here's a trademark gay record: The Police's Zenyatta Mondatta. It contains the most beautiful gay anthems someone could ever write. In "Don't Stand so Close To Me" Sting. the lead singer, is not afraid to shout out loud with all the words that he doesn't appreciate women close to him. "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da" is pure poetry and was voted Gay Anthem of The Year in a 1981 BBC's poll. "Behind my camel" and "Canary in a Coalmine" carefully examinate the existence of homossexuality in the animal world.

It's a really good album, it's got reggae, it's got new wave, clever instrumentals. It may sound a bit dorky and annoying at sometimes, but it's okay. it's because they're all gay.

Track listing:

1) Don't Stand So Close To Me; 2) Driven To Tears; 3) When The World Is Running Down You Make The Best Of What's Still Around; 4) Canary In A Coalmine; 5) Voices Inside My Head; 6) Bombs Away; 7) De Do Do Do De Da Da Da; 8) Behind My Camel; 9) Man In A Suitcase; 10) Shadows In The Rain; 11) The Other Way Of Stopping.

Paul Revere & The Raiders - The Spirit of 67' (1967)

Dammit, does this album cover sucks or what?
But, skip that, there is great music inside it.

From allmusic.com:
"By the time they recorded their third Top Ten album The Spirit of '67, Paul Revere and the Raiders were firmly established as one of America's best and most popular homegrown rock 'n' roll acts. The band had also begun to spread its wings creatively, expanding the garage-flavored rock 'n' roll of their early hits into more ambitious and sophisticated musical territory. Along with such classic Raiders smashes as "Hungry," "Good Thing" and "The Great Airplane Strike," The Spirit of '67 finds the quintet embracing psychedelia on such tunes as "Oh! To Be a Man," "1001 Arabian Nights" and "Undecided Man," while delivering memorable showcases for bassist Phil "Fang" Volk ("Why? Why? Why?") and drummer Michael "Smitty" Smith ("Our Candidate"). This expanded edition augments the original 11-song album with three rare bonus tracks, including an alternate version of "Hungry" and the single mix of "The Great Airplane Strike."

1. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Good Thing (3:06)
2. Paul Revere & The Raiders - All About (3:03)
3. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Hungry (2:59)
4. Paul Revere & The Raiders - In My Comm (2:11)
5. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Louise (2:11)
6. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Why Why (3:00)
7. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Oh! To Be (3:05)
8. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Undecided (1:50)
9. Paul Revere & The Raiders - Our Candidate (2:53)
10. Paul Revere & The Raiders - 1001 Arabi (4:27)
11. Paul Revere & The Raiders - The GreatAirplane Strike (3:14)

The Go! Team - Proof of Youth(2007) and Thunder Lightining Strike (2004)

Even though at first they may sound a bit TOO poppy and indiey, they are great, believe me. If you can stand excessively happy music, you'll love them like I do.

The key factor is that they represent very well the London cultural miscigenation, for example, their leadsinger is a black rapper Ninja. They also have a japanese singer who acts like they're recording an anime soundtrack. And the main songwriter is Ian Parton, who loves 70's blackexploitation music and spy movies.

The final result is not a mess, and instead, one of the most interesing mixs of different styles I've ever heard. If you don't like the video for Doing It Right below, try listening to another of their songs on youtube.

Frank Zappa - You Are What You Is

From Markprindle.com:

"I already owned cheap or free copies of Hot Rats, Uncle Meat, We're Only In It For The Money, Fillmore East June 1971, Apostrophe (`), Strictly Commercial (a "best of" compilation I didn't review here) and Shut Your Mouth With A Guitar, but all of them just made me feel.. Mmm, semi-interested. Like, I could tell that one day I WOULD be a fan because a lot of it seemed really smart, but that day just hadn't come. But You Are What You Is made that day come. The only reason I bought it in the first place was because I was digging through a bunch of cheapy CD bins where the deal was "Buy 9, get a 10th free" and I'd already found 9. I honestly didn't expect to like it at all, but the Moon was shining on Sagitarrius that day because it ended up being my ticket into a splendid world unknown. Suddenly I "GOT" Zappa! And I wanted more more MORE MORE!!!"

If that record made Prindle a Zappa-fan, it can make YOU too.

Adam Green - Gemstones (2005)

From allmusic.com:

"Musically, Adam Green is a pop craftsman par excellence. He seems to be a very gifted student of pop music's vast and intricate rule book. Thus his music is not especially original in any way, though often sophisticated, tuneful, and clever. On Gemstones, the third and best of his solo albums, Green seems to have perfected his art. Some of the tracks here rank among the finest pop songs that are made these days. There's the wonderfully melancholic ballads such as "Losing on a Tuesday" and "Before My Bedtime". There's the catchy and fun, almost '50s-styled rock & roll such as single "Emily," while "Carolina" is another slice of wonderful cabaret pop, and on "Over the Sunrise" he suddenly goes all Jim Morrison on you. In other words, there's something for everyone here. In fact, all 15 tracks have strong musical qualities. An unusually strong, well-produced album of classic songwriting."

2.Down On The Street – 2:07

The Monkees - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, LTD. (1967)

I'll quote Mark Prindle again because I'm at work right now and I better finish this post quick or boss will catch me "hangin' round", like the song in this album says.

"Bullshit entertainment doesn't get much better than this! Screw Monkee input - Nesmith contributes a ridiculous "psychedelic" song and a wonderful lounge pop number, but the other guys don't do jack! Just oodles and oodles of fantastic tracks contributed by outside writers. You've probably only ever heard "Pleasant Valley Sunday," but you need to hear the rest. More Beatle guitar rock, moog pop, country, tapdance shimmy - hooahh! Even the Davy stuff is great! No ballads from Mr. Jones! What a great record. Buy it a lot! If it had "Last Train To Clarksville," it'd be darn near perfect!"

Track listing:
1) Salesman;
2) She Hangs Out;
3) The Door Into Summer;
4) Love Is Only Sleeping;
5) Cuddly Toy;
6) Words;
7) Hard To Believe;
8) What Am I Doing Hanging 'Round;

Ween - The Mollusk (1997)

.............Good Lord, that's a hard album to summarize.
Ween are a wonderful duo that started creating weird joke-tunes in 1990. Releasing a bunch of very good and diverse albuns, they finally reached their creativity peak in 1997, with this album: The Mollusk.

.............It's hard to say if those songs are joke-songs or serious. For example, "The Blarney Stone" emulates a pirate drinking song, "Mutilated Lips" is a spooky-ballad with a dark tone, "Buckingham Green" sounds like a 70's progressive rock song, "Waving my Dick in The Wind" is... well... it talks about waving a guy named Dick in the wind. I'm not sure what that means, though.

.............Markprindle.com gave it a 10. George Starostin gave it a 10. Allmusic gave it 4,5 stars.

.............I don't rate it at all, but I give you a free download link, so, download it, WOMAN.

1) I'm Dancing In The Show Tonite
2) The Mollusk
3) Polka Dot Tail
4) I'll Be Your Johnny On The Spot
5) Mutilated Lips
6) The Blarney Stone
7) It's Gonna Be (Alright)

Os Mutantes - Discografia/Discography

What can I say about this absolutely fantastic band besided it is quasi-unanimously considered the best rock band from Brazil?

Some people even pair up their albuns with the Beatles's. If that doesn't make you feel curious, I guess nothing will.

1969 - Os Mutantes

1970 - A Divina Comédia (ou Ando Meio Desligado)

The Who - Live at Leeds Deluxe Edition

Rushed out in 1970 as a way to bide time as the Who toiled away on their follow-up to Tommy, Live at Leeds wasn't intended to be the definitive Who live album, and many collectors maintain that the band had better shows available on bootlegs. But those shows weren't easily available whereas Live at Leeds was, and even if this show may not have been the absolute best, it's so damn close to it that it would be impossible for anybody but aficionados to argue. Here, the Who sound vicious — as heavy as Led Zeppelin but twice as volatile — as they careen through early classics with the confidence of a band that finally achieved acclaim but had yet to become preoccupied with making art. In that regard, this recording — in its many different forms — may have been perfectly timed in terms of capturing the band at a pivotal moment in its history.

Disc one

2."I Can't Explain" (Townshend) – 2:26

Both sides of Sparks

Sparks were one of the best art-pop band of the seventhies releasing at least 4 masterpieces. They consist of the two Mael brothers, Ron(the one on the photo who carries that beautiful mustache for 30 years now) and Rusell. Ron writes the intricate melodies on the piano and Russell sings it.

I have to admit I don't listen to them much often now but they will always be one of my top 20 favourite bands. And they are very unknown, so, I didn't hesitate in making this wonderful compilation that will show to you the best of their two phases: The seventhies art-pop phase and their 2000's CLASSICAL-OPERA-POP-ROCK phase.

Have you ever thought about it how would Mozart sound if he wanted a top100 hit on the USA? Well, its exactly how the second phase Sparks sound.

Their lyrics are so goood that i've included a brief description after some song titles ahead, but, keep in mind that almost every song has hilarious lyrics:

DISC 1 - SEVENTHIES
1 - This Town ain't big enough for the both us
2 - Happy Hunting Ground
3 - At Home At Work At Play
4 - Here In Heaven
it's about a boy who kills himself after making a pact with his girlfriend. But she doesn't kills herself and he gets a bit angry.
5 - Thanks But no Thanks
it's about a little boy refusing drugs because his parents wouldn't let him.
6 - How Are You Getting Home
the guy wants to take the girl home just to make moves on her. naughty.
7 - Talent Is An Asset
it's about the child Albert Einstein.
8 - Equator
9 - Barbecutie
10 - Achoo
11 - Get in the Swing

DISC 2 - 00's
1 - Intro
2 - Perfume
It's about perfumes, mainly. Still hilarious, though.
3 - How Do I Get to Carnegie Hall
It's based on that famous joke about a tourist asking how to go to the famous theater carnegie hall: "How do i get do carnegie hall?", and the other guy answers: "Practice, man. Practice."
4 - Good Morning
5 - Metaphor
"A metaphor is a wonderful thing, girls dig dig D-I-G dig dig metaphors, use them wisely, use them well, and you'll never know the hell of loliness."
6 - Dick Around
7 - The Rhytm Thief
8 - Lighten Up, Morrissey
I'm not sure what is this about but it mentions the Smith's vocalist.
9 - My Baby's Taking me Home
His baby is taking him home. He mentions it a couple thousand times.
10 - Strange Animal
11 - Waterproof
12 - There's no Such thing as Aliens

JvCv's favourite They Might Be Giant songs

If you still haven't heard They Might Be Giants and you think you know something about pop music, you're completely wrong, my friend. TMBG are probably the best poprock band from late
eighties and nineties.
.
This compilation brings together all of Jesvs Cristvs's favourite songs from the band. Ranging from their first(1988) to their last album(2007) these wonderful pop melodies carry only two things in common: unlimited creativity and unlimited catchiness.
.
Undispensable for art and smart-pop fans.
.
1 - Bee of the bird of the moth
2 - My evil twin
3 - They'll need a Crane
4 - Put your hand inside the puppet head
5 - Don't Let's Start
6 - Birdhouse of the soul
7 - The Mesopotamians
8 - Mammal
9 - Ana Ng
10 - Hide Away Folk Family
11 - Purple Toupee
12 - Your not the Boss of Me(Malcolm in the middle soundtrack)
13 - I Palindrome I
14 - I'm Impressed
15 - She's an Angel
16 - Birdhouse in your soul (LIVE)

Stereolab - JvCv's three favourite albuns

Stereolab is a french/british band formed in 1990, in London. The band's singer is the beautiful Laetitia Sadier, a parisian girl who sings in one of the best female vocals in rock music. As Mark Prindle says in his website: "there is no ego on her singings, unlike most of the female vocalists". And that's what make it so beautiful.

Next you will find three albuns that are in my opinion, the best albuns of the band. First, paradoxally, their last album: Chemical Chords(2008). This is easily my favourite one. Pop melodies enhanced with cosmic spiritual power. You may treat it as easy listening pop-music or deep mystic preachings, it will work the same.
The other two albuns I've chosen are Emperor Tomato Ketchup from 1996, their most critically aclaimed record, and the 2003 EP Instant 0 in the Universe. This EP was released soon after the death of one of the band's members, and you can feel that this is a homage to the deceased friend.
