Yoko Ono - Between My Head and Sky (2009)

When I was just a kid who thought Yoko Ono is no more than the "Woman who broke the Beatles apart", this one fellow came in and showed me how wrong I was.

Very few people know how incredible this japanese lady is. Besides being a very well-known artist since early fifties (when John Lennon was still wearing diapers), and a very special musician, Yoko has already proved to be a wonderful and very humble person. Difficult qualities for musicians, these days.

To record Between My Hand and Sky, Yoko regrouped with the Plastic Ono Band and Sean Lennon. The result is one of her more accesible albuns. It has rocknroll, funk, moving ballads and electronic goofiness.

I wouldn't know about all this, if it wasn't for this old fellow of mine. Today is a special day for him, and this post goes as a homage.

Neu! (1972)

I didn't find a good review from this album, so I'll make mine.
This is some GOOD OLD KRAUTROCK formed by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother after their split from Kraftwerk in the early 70's. End.

1. Hallogallo – 10:07
AWESOME, pretty hypnotic, even the Bishop likes it (I know this because Hallogallo was in his MSN's quick message for days!)
2. Sonderangebot ("Special Offer") – 4:51
3. Weissensee ("White Sea" or "White Lake") – 6:46
4. Im Glück ("Lucky") – 6:52
5. Negativland ("Negative Land") – 9:47
Well, this music rocks so hard that inspired a band!
6. Lieber Honig ("Dear Honey" or "Rather Honey") – 7:18

Tangerine Dream - Phaedra (1974)

Ok, so people always send me emails saying how nice the records I put on the blog are, how I never post bad music here, how my musical taste and fantastic and etc...

Well, here's a terrible record. I hate it.

Phaedra is regarded by many as Tangerine Dream's masterpiece. Supposedly, this album is one of the best ambient-music records that have ever been made. Many call it a ""transcendental experience"", or, to quote some fellow from amazon.com: "it took me beyond the limits of my imagination".

I have no idea how can someone go beyond the limits of his imagination listening to 40 minutes of one keyboard note constantly pressed. I guess I just don't have what it takes to reach the spiritual potential of such deep albuns, as, for example: Brian Eno's extremely highly acclaimed ambience albuns.

Brian Eno, a very spiritual guy.

If you wanna listen to it and come up with an opinion by yourselves, the download link is right below:

  1. "Phaedra" – 17:45
  2. "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares" – 9:55
  3. "Movements of a Visionary" – 8:01
  4. "Sequent C' " – 2:18

Gong - Flying Teapot (1973)

God dammit. I was taking a look at my recent posts today and I figured I have been posting only crazy people's music. It's bizarre because I did it unconsciously, but, just take a quick look at JvCv's last posts:

Brian "Schizophrenic" Wilson,
Captain "Nuts" Beefheart,
Damo "Jeovah Witness" Suzuki from CAN,
Frank "I never made a normal record in my life" Zappa,
Roky "Lobotomized" Erickson;

"Well" - I thought to myself - "if the subject is crazy people's music, then the blog is sure lacking a Gong record. Gong is surely one of the most freaky bands that have landed on this planet. Flying Teapot will do the job just perfectly."

And here it is.

"Gong's leadsinger Daevid Allen asking for a hug."

1) Radio Gnome Invisible;
2) Flying Teapot;
3) The Pot Head Pixies;
4) The Octave Doctors And The Crystal Machine;
5) Zero The Hero And The Witch's Spell;
6) Witch's Song I Am Your Pussy

Captain Beefheart - Ice Cream for Crow (1982)

Another crazy man's album. This one is the last record made by the legendary Don Van Vliet, or, Captain Beefheart. If you're not familiar with him yet, well... I guess you're going to be a bit shocked with Ice Cream For Crow.

Although not as shocking as his famous record Trout Mask Republica(1968), this one shows a older and maturer Beefheart. Allegedly a schizophrenic and visibly not completely sane, he sounds like a dying pirate cursing his fellow shipmates here.

After this record, Beefheart left the music businness and went to live isolated somewhere in the californian desert. Some don't even know if he's still alive. Well, God bless that poor soul.

Can - Ege Bamyasi (1972)

This is a fantastic record. One of my favourites ever, definitely.
If you still arent familiar with Can and Krautrock, I'd recommend you to search wikipedia to see what they stand for. In resume, they are a german band with a japanese singer who sings in mumblings.

This record is one of those you get high while listening to. I mean, not literally, it's just that the sound is so grasping and involving, you can't help but start feeling part of the experience.

Prindle describes it as:
"Like you just fell like putting on dark sunglasses and shaking your head back and forth like a heroin user might before the dark slumber of death rolls over."

Starostin describes it as:
"Keywords: 'organic', 'polyrhythmic', 'tribal', 'voodoo', 'dark', 'mystical', but far from the generic game 'Let's Pretend We're So Very Psychic''. Let it just grow on you."

1) Pinch;
2) Sing Swan Song;
3) One More Night;
4) Vitamin C;
5) Soup;
6) I'm So Green;
7) Spoon

Frank Zappa - You Are What You Is

From Markprindle.com:

"I already owned cheap or free copies of Hot Rats, Uncle Meat, We're Only In It For The Money, Fillmore East June 1971, Apostrophe (`), Strictly Commercial (a "best of" compilation I didn't review here) and Shut Your Mouth With A Guitar, but all of them just made me feel.. Mmm, semi-interested. Like, I could tell that one day I WOULD be a fan because a lot of it seemed really smart, but that day just hadn't come. But You Are What You Is made that day come. The only reason I bought it in the first place was because I was digging through a bunch of cheapy CD bins where the deal was "Buy 9, get a 10th free" and I'd already found 9. I honestly didn't expect to like it at all, but the Moon was shining on Sagitarrius that day because it ended up being my ticket into a splendid world unknown. Suddenly I "GOT" Zappa! And I wanted more more MORE MORE!!!"

If that record made Prindle a Zappa-fan, it can make YOU too.

Primus - Sailing The Seas of Cheese (1991)

From wikipedia.com:

Sailing the Seas of Cheese is the second album and major-label debut by Primus, released on July 2, 1991.

Sailing the Seas of Cheese was Primus' breakthrough album, spawning singles "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "Tommy the Cat", and fan favorites such as "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers" and "American Life".

This album displays more funk influence than its predecessor Frizzle Fry and is somewhat more dissonant. It stresses world and political issues, such as a negative depiction of military life ("Sgt. Baker"), awareness of people living in poverty ("American Life"), being an outcast ("Eleven"), and the use of crystal meth amongst low-income workers ("Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers"). "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" contains a sample from the movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 where the character 'Chop Top' exclaims "Dog will hunt!". "Los Bastardos" contains three samples from the BBC TV series The Young Ones of Vyvyan shouting "Shut up you bastards!", and two of Rick saying, "You just called me a bastard, didn't you?", and "Mike, you bastard!".

Secret Chiefs 3

This is one of the most amazing bands I've discovered this whole year.
The thing is they aren't just one band, but at least 7 different bands recording under the same name(and a weird one): Secret Chiefs 3.

It's unbelievable how they can play so many different musical styles and mix them together in individual albums. "Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws", from 1998, for example, starts with a classical piece, jumps to a Surf-rock craze and a few minutes later you'll be listening to Arabic-Persian music with electric guitars.

"Book M" goes in the same vein, with lyrics rambling about Hinduism and Mysticism, they manage to put Death-metal near to Indian music followed by Ennio Morricone-like songs and electronica experiments.

"Traditionalists: Le Mani DeStre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini" is a different record, though. It doesn't contain all the bands that form SC3 but only one of them: Traditionalists. The whole concept of this album is amazing: it's a fake soundtrack to an italian horror movie that doesn't exist. If you like B-Horror Movies, you'll love this.

Brainticket - Cottonwood Hill (1971)

Cottonwoodhill is one of the trippiest records ever made, capturing the intensity of the peak LSD experience far more successfully than any Timothy Leary recording, and even today, when many such documents from that era can sound silly and dated, Brainticket's fascinating debut still holds hallucinogenic potency. Rather than the laid-back mellow groove of some psychedelic music from this era, Cottonwoodhill has a hyper energy in the frenetic organ riff and Muir's voice, like an acid trip out of control, while at times the various sound effects take over completely.

On the original records inside, it was issued with a Warning of "After Listening to this Record, your friends may not know you anymore" and "Only listen to this once a day. Your brain might be destroyed!"

1. "Black Sand" (Ron Bryer, Joel Vandroogenbroeck) – 4:05
2. "Places of Light" (Bryer, Dawn Muir, Vandroogenroeck) – 4:05
3. "Brainticket, Pt. 1" (Bryer, Hellmuth Kolbe, Muir, Vandroogenbroeck) – 8:21
4. "Brainticket, Pt. 1: Conclusion" (Bryer, Kolbe, Muir, Vandroogenbroeck) – 4:36

Stereolab - JvCv's three favourite albuns

Stereolab is a french/british band formed in 1990, in London. The band's singer is the beautiful Laetitia Sadier, a parisian girl who sings in one of the best female vocals in rock music. As Mark Prindle says in his website: "there is no ego on her singings, unlike most of the female vocalists". And that's what make it so beautiful.

Next you will find three albuns that are in my opinion, the best albuns of the band. First, paradoxally, their last album: Chemical Chords(2008). This is easily my favourite one. Pop melodies enhanced with cosmic spiritual power. You may treat it as easy listening pop-music or deep mystic preachings, it will work the same.
The other two albuns I've chosen are Emperor Tomato Ketchup from 1996, their most critically aclaimed record, and the 2003 EP Instant 0 in the Universe. This EP was released soon after the death of one of the band's members, and you can feel that this is a homage to the deceased friend.

JvCv's World Greatest Mashups

"A mashup, bootleg or blend(also mash up and mash-up) is a song or composition created by blending two or more songs."

.
These songs are taken from two records. The first one is called Let It Beast and was made by Dj BC. They are mixs of Beastie Boys songs with Beatles's songs. Fantastic stuff. Next, I've selected 6 songs from the record Revolved, album made by a Touch-by-the-Hand-of-God called CCC. Hetransformed each song from the Beatles's album Revolver into something different. Genious stuff, a must listen.
.

.
On side B, I've put a variety of creative mashups ranging from David Bowie meets Deep Purple to Britney Spears meets Van Halen. Great interesting listens ahead.

Negativland - Escape from Noise (1987)

  1. "Announcement"
  2. "Quiet Please"
  3. "Michael Jackson"
  4. "Escape from Noise"
  5. "The Playboy Channel"
  6. "Stress in Marriage"
  7. "Nesbitt's Lime Soda Song"
  8. "Over the Hiccups"
  9. "Sycamore"
  10. "Car Bomb"
  11. "Methods of Torture"
  12. "Yellow Black and Rectangular"
  13. "Backstage Pass"
  14. "Christianity Is Stupid"
  15. "Time Zones"
  16. "You Don't Even Live Here"
  17. "The Way of It"
  18. "Endscape"

Experimentalismo e samples. Muitos samples.

Detalhe pra música “Over the Hiccups” – na qual uma menininha com soluço cantarola "Over the Rainbow", parodiando Judy Garland.

18 faixas que valem a pena serem escutadas. 42:12 minutos que valem a pena serem perdidos.

Negativland is an experimental music and sound collage band from the 80's. "Escape from Noise" is one of JvCv favorites and is full of humorous samples and noise. A masterpiece.
