Tom Zé - Estudando o Samba (1975)

The weirdest samba album I've ever heard.

Tom Zé is a brilliant brazilian multi-instrumentalist that was influential in the late sixties Tropicália movement but kept recording great albuns in the other decades too.

Even though he's a very talented artist, Tom Zé didn't enjoy much success and lived in relative obscurity throughout the 80's and 90's, until David Byrne, Talking Heads's lead singer, in a visit to Rio de Janeiro, found this album(Estudando o Samba, Studying Samba) in a record shop and instantaneously fell in love.

Byrne then went on to find Tom Zé and offered to produce him and sign him to his american label Luaka Bop from this point on. This is a true story, I swear. I read it in the internet.

Tom Zé in 1978, on a sexy photoshoot for Playboy magazine.

Rough Guide to Indonesia

From allmusic.com:

Like most releases in the Rough Guide series, this compilation provides a solid overview of the music of a particular region, but Indonesia's musical traditions are probably among the least well-known in the West. World music aficionados may be familiar with the gamelan orchestras for which the region has become known, but this 15-song CD exposes the broad diversity of sounds you might expect from a country with over 550 ethnic groups spread across more than 17,500 islands. From the traditional gamelan and throbbing percussion of CBMW's folksy "Sambasunda" and the lilting guitar picking and melancholy vocals of Grup Bamba Puang's "Los Quin Tallu-Tallu" to the more modern, Indian- and Arabic-influenced pop sounds of artists like Elvy Sukaesih and her former partner, Rhoma Irama, The Rough Guide to Indonesia provides an accessible introduction to some very unfamiliar musical traditions.

1 - CBMW - Sambasunda 2 - Waldjinah - Anoman Obong 3 - Elvy Sukaesih - Kareta Malam 4 - Rhoma Irama - Begadang 5 - L.S. Gelik - Jeruk Manis 6 - Detty Kurnia - Dar Der Dor 7 - Grup Bamba Puang - Los Quin TalluTailu 8 - Imas Permas and Asep Kosasih - Ceurik Rahwana 9 - Sabah Habas Mustapha & The Jugala Allstars - Sumbawa 10 - Sandii - Rentak 106 11 - Ibu Maimunah Mochtar and Group - Joged Laksmana Mati Raden Ditembak 12 - Uning-Uningan - Pege Sakarimpang 13 - Gentra Pasundan - KucapKucip 14 - Nasida Ria - Boleh Bersuka Ria 15 - Waldjinah and Gesang - Bengawan Solo

The Rough Guide to Cajun & Zydeco

Cajun e Zydeco são dois estilos musicais de origem dos franco-canadenses que, expulsos do Canadá, se fixaram na Louisiana. Estado americano onde a capital é New Orleans.

A fantastic compilation with the best of Cajun and Zydeko(music from french louisiana). Even though it sounds folkloric, it also sounds modern. This is not pure folkloric music, the influences of Rocknroll, Blues, Jazz and Country are evident and gratefully accepted.
