[Covers and Tribvtes V] Ramones - Acid Eaters

The Ramones released one of their most unusual albums in 1993. They combined their fast, driving, punk sound to twelve classic rock songs from the 1960s. The band had always had an affection for the raw energy of early rock songs, even hiring the legendary Phil Spector to produce their 1980 album "End of the Century." Seventeen years after their first album, the band released an album containing nothing but covers of 1960s songs, giving it an appropriately wild title: "Acid Eaters."

1."Journey to the Center of the Mind" – 2:52
(Original by Amboy Dukes)
2."Substitute" – 3:15
(Original by The Who)
3."Out of Time" – 2:41
(Original by The Rolling Stones)
4."The Shape of Things to Come" – 1:46
(Original by Max Frost and the Troopers)
5."Somebody to Love" – 2:31
(Original by The Great Society)
6."When I Was Young" – 3:16
(Original by The Animals)
7."7 and 7 Is" – 1:50
(Original by Love)
8."My Back Pages" – 2:27

9."Can't Seem to Make You Mine" – 2:42
(Original by The Seeds)
10."Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" – 2:22

Big Daddy - Sgt. Pepper's (1992)

Another Sgt. Pepper tribute album in less than a week, this is how previsible this blog is. Anyway, this won't be a problem since we all love hearing what people do to the Beatles's songs.

Big Daddy used to be a parody band from Los Angelos in the eighties. They were famous for playing well-known classics in 50's style. "When I'm Sixty Four" is now a doo-wop ballad. "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is turned into rockabilly. "A Day in The Life" sounds like as if it were made by Buddy Holly. And I love it all.

Big Daddy performing their version of the title-track on a german tv show. (skip to 1 minute):

A tribe Called Quest - Low end Theory (1991)

From allmusic.com:

With The Low End Theory, A Tribe Called Quest created one of the closest and most brilliant fusions of jazz atmosphere and hip-hop attitude ever recorded. The rapping by Q-Tip and Phife Dawg could be the smoothest of any rap record ever heard; the pair are so in tune with each other, they sound like flip sides of the same personality. One of the best hip-hop albums in history, a record that sounds better with each listen. The Low End Theory is an unqualified success, the perfect marriage of intelligent, flowing raps to nuanced, groove-centered productions.

1. A Tribe Called Quest - Excursions (3:54)

Lilys - The 3 Way (1999)

Amazon.com's Best of 1999:
"The Lilys' music will instantly remind you of a handful of classic organ- and guitar-heavy combos from the '60s, but they're wholly unlike any other retro outfit on earth. Theirs is an alternate vision of '60s psychedelia. Neither pretentious nor full of itself, the stuff totally rocks, Nuggets-style, in spite of the disjointed lyrics and way-complicated song structures. --Mike McGonigal"

I love this record. My favourite 60's ripoff album ever. If you like The Kinks or Beatles, give it a listen.

Primus - Sailing The Seas of Cheese (1991)

From wikipedia.com:

Sailing the Seas of Cheese is the second album and major-label debut by Primus, released on July 2, 1991.

Sailing the Seas of Cheese was Primus' breakthrough album, spawning singles "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "Tommy the Cat", and fan favorites such as "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers" and "American Life".

This album displays more funk influence than its predecessor Frizzle Fry and is somewhat more dissonant. It stresses world and political issues, such as a negative depiction of military life ("Sgt. Baker"), awareness of people living in poverty ("American Life"), being an outcast ("Eleven"), and the use of crystal meth amongst low-income workers ("Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers"). "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" contains a sample from the movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 where the character 'Chop Top' exclaims "Dog will hunt!". "Los Bastardos" contains three samples from the BBC TV series The Young Ones of Vyvyan shouting "Shut up you bastards!", and two of Rick saying, "You just called me a bastard, didn't you?", and "Mike, you bastard!".

Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles (1993)

Mark Prindle's review of the album(which got a 10 in his rating system):
.
The coolest. The tempo-halting harmonic "gleeng gloong!"s in "Thermal Treasure," the queasy axe meanderings of a solo Mr. Ash in "My Kimono," the harmonic-laden rat-a-tat-a-tat chorus in "Sure Shot," the pick-tapping-string solos in "Stinger (Five Wigs)," the high-energy guitar swoops and clachunkas in "Action Vs. Vibe" (action wins by a longshot), the smash-em-up count-to-fives that close "Gemini Cusp" - crud, dude - these fellows had their thinking caps on. To rock so handily, yet screw around with the accepted usages of normal pop instruments and structure to such a degree: them Polvos, they's some thinking fellers!
.
Sonic in their youth, too!
.
Bad company? Polvo refuses to repeat itself, trying new styles and methods of play with each release. This one's my favorite because I feel like they offer up a slightly larger number of brilliant ideas in these ten songs than they do on any of their other records. Among the songs I haven't already mentioned, "Tilebreaker" is straight-ahead indie rock like on the debut EP, "Time Isn't On My Side" is a herky-jerky keyboard-driven toe-tapper, "Shiska" is short and punky like Glenn Danzig before the accident, and "Lazy Comet" goes from stupid kiddie singalong to unsteady lightweight destructo-change-o in less time than it takes for me to turn the volume up really really loud whenever that genius Sheryl Crow song "If It Makes You Happy" comes on the air - aww now you're speaking my language in the upstairs room. I love this album, this band, and my girlfriend, and I suggest you do the same.
.
Except for my girlfriend. Asshole.

01 - Thermal Treasure
02 - Lazy Comet
03 - My Kimono
04 - Sire Shot
05 - Stinger (five wigs)

Ween - The Mollusk (1997)

.............Good Lord, that's a hard album to summarize.
Ween are a wonderful duo that started creating weird joke-tunes in 1990. Releasing a bunch of very good and diverse albuns, they finally reached their creativity peak in 1997, with this album: The Mollusk.

.............It's hard to say if those songs are joke-songs or serious. For example, "The Blarney Stone" emulates a pirate drinking song, "Mutilated Lips" is a spooky-ballad with a dark tone, "Buckingham Green" sounds like a 70's progressive rock song, "Waving my Dick in The Wind" is... well... it talks about waving a guy named Dick in the wind. I'm not sure what that means, though.

.............Markprindle.com gave it a 10. George Starostin gave it a 10. Allmusic gave it 4,5 stars.

.............I don't rate it at all, but I give you a free download link, so, download it, WOMAN.

1) I'm Dancing In The Show Tonite
2) The Mollusk
3) Polka Dot Tail
4) I'll Be Your Johnny On The Spot
5) Mutilated Lips
6) The Blarney Stone
7) It's Gonna Be (Alright)
8) The Golden Eel
9) Cold Blows The Wind

Secret Chiefs 3

This is one of the most amazing bands I've discovered this whole year.
The thing is they aren't just one band, but at least 7 different bands recording under the same name(and a weird one): Secret Chiefs 3.

It's unbelievable how they can play so many different musical styles and mix them together in individual albums. "Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws", from 1998, for example, starts with a classical piece, jumps to a Surf-rock craze and a few minutes later you'll be listening to Arabic-Persian music with electric guitars.

"Book M" goes in the same vein, with lyrics rambling about Hinduism and Mysticism, they manage to put Death-metal near to Indian music followed by Ennio Morricone-like songs and electronica experiments.

"Traditionalists: Le Mani DeStre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini" is a different record, though. It doesn't contain all the bands that form SC3 but only one of them: Traditionalists. The whole concept of this album is amazing: it's a fake soundtrack to an italian horror movie that doesn't exist. If you like B-Horror Movies, you'll love this.

Stereolab - JvCv's three favourite albuns

Stereolab is a french/british band formed in 1990, in London. The band's singer is the beautiful Laetitia Sadier, a parisian girl who sings in one of the best female vocals in rock music. As Mark Prindle says in his website: "there is no ego on her singings, unlike most of the female vocalists". And that's what make it so beautiful.

Next you will find three albuns that are in my opinion, the best albuns of the band. First, paradoxally, their last album: Chemical Chords(2008). This is easily my favourite one. Pop melodies enhanced with cosmic spiritual power. You may treat it as easy listening pop-music or deep mystic preachings, it will work the same.
The other two albuns I've chosen are Emperor Tomato Ketchup from 1996, their most critically aclaimed record, and the 2003 EP Instant 0 in the Universe. This EP was released soon after the death of one of the band's members, and you can feel that this is a homage to the deceased friend.

Digable Planets

Deleite.

One of the innumerable hiphop bands from the nineties that have come up and gone out without making too much fuss. Oldschool hiphop with excellent jazz samples and a vocalist, Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" with a beautiful marvelous voice. Instead of the traditional YO DAWG IM A RAPPER TREAT YOUR WOMAN RIGHT MY BUTT IS BIG that you're used to hear from black hiphop female singers, Ladybuf sensually rhymes, sweetly. Delight.

The Fall - 4 - Crash and Reformation (1995-1999)

Crash

In these years, in which they've made 4 albums, The Fall has gone some turbulent moments. In 1998, in the middle of an american tour, Mark E. Smith(band leader) literally fights with the drummer. The band disappears for a while and many thought this would be their end.

Reformation
Mas eles estavam errados. A banda volta em 1999, contando com a influência forte de Julia Nagle(a moçoila bonita da capa do álbum) o The Fall lança o single Touch Sensitive, como se nada tivesse acontecido.

They were wrong, though. The band comes back in 1999, with the strong influence of Julia Nagle(the beautiful lassie on the album cover), with the single Touch Sensitive. Just as if nothing had happened.

Esse álbum não é tão facilmente-gostável quando a outra coletânea(número 5) que fiz anteriormente. Mas, espero que se dediquem. Padre Leilo ficaria orgulhoso.

This album isn't as easily-likeable as the other compilation(number 5) I had made. But I hope you dedicate yourselves. Father Leslie would be proud.
