Some really interesting Beatles's covers here for you fellows.
Highlights:
-Echo & the Bunnymen's rendition of Ticked To Ride is sometimes even better than the original. More rocking and straightforward than you could ever imagine.
-Otis Redding's famous Day Tripper soul cover.
-Marianne Faithfull (ex Mick Jagger's girlfriend) singing I'm A Loser in a beautifully sophisticated tone.
-My favourite here is the last song. Booker T & The MG's instrumental version of I Want You (She's so Heavy). Powerful stuff, I tell ya.

[Covers and Tribvtes VI] - "96 tears"

Too many teardrops... for one heart... to be cryin'...
Too many teardrops... for one heart... to carry on...



96 tears is a classic garage-rock song from 1966. The original version is by "? & The Mysterians" (yes, the name of the leadsinger is ?). On the video above you can check they performing it in 1998.

They keyboard riff is one of the most catchy ever so it's no surprise the song was extensively covered by a whole lot of different bands. From the famous Strangles punky cover to Aretha Franklin's soul version.

My favourite version is the hardrock/bluesy version by a band called Gerardo Manuel & El Humo. I had never heard of this guy before but they knock it off pretty well in an anthemic way.

The Doors - Soft Parade (1969)

The less talked-about Doors record. Undeservedly, in my opinion. I love how the band started making simple pop and blues songs. Where's the band who did "The End" and "When the Music is over" a couple years ago? Where's the band who's going to do "Riders on the storm" some years later?

Tell All the People and Touch Me are my favourites. The first one has Jim screaming as if he were a messiah. The second one, Touch Me, is a timeless classic, and I won't lose my time describing it: "Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, now touch me, baby!"

Easy Star Allstars - Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009)

After famously covering Pink Floyd(I'll post this one tomorrow) and Radiohead, the infamous dub-reggae band goes to cover the biggest record of them all: the Beatles's Sgt. Pepper.

The whole thing is fantastic, even though they are just having a lot of fun, some of these covers even approach what is commonly referred as ART.

There is no bad song here, I mean, if you like REGGAE and DUB, because that's what it is. I was really worried about how would the "Within Without You" cover sound like, though. When I heard it, boy, was I surprised or what? It's GRATE! What about the "She's Leaving Home" version, then?

That's the best funk compilation I've ever found to date. I found it by luck the other day on the internet, and it's completely fantastic.

This is real FUNK music, before disco came out and beat the shit out of it. It's got power and It's got SOUL(in the literal meaning of the word, these guys play with their heart).

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady (1963)

Music Machine - Beyond The Garage

This is one of my other favourite bands from the 60's garage movement. They made a very original sound that combined the traditional amateurish protopunk sound with very werid time signatures and strange riffs, to quote Mark Prindle: "their songs are WeIrD! I mean wEiRd! I mean WEird! weIRD! WeirD! wEIRd! WeiRd! wEIrD! God, the potential permutations are ENDLESS!!!!"

Although nearly every song here is top-notch, it may require a few more listens than usual to get you acquainted with their strange sound. Suffice to say they were leaded by THIS man:

"Mean sideburns and leather gloves, babe."

I'll quote Mark Prindle again because I'm at work right now and I better finish this post quick or boss will catch me "hangin' round", like the song in this album says.

"Bullshit entertainment doesn't get much better than this! Screw Monkee input - Nesmith contributes a ridiculous "psychedelic" song and a wonderful lounge pop number, but the other guys don't do jack! Just oodles and oodles of fantastic tracks contributed by outside writers. You've probably only ever heard "Pleasant Valley Sunday," but you need to hear the rest. More Beatle guitar rock, moog pop, country, tapdance shimmy - hooahh! Even the Davy stuff is great! No ballads from Mr. Jones! What a great record. Buy it a lot! If it had "Last Train To Clarksville," it'd be darn near perfect!"

Blue Cheer - Outside Inside (1968)

One of my favourite hard-psychedelic albuns ever. I'll quote the words of the sage George Starostin to help me out:

"Christ!"

"This must be the worst production on any album I've ever heard. In fact, the first impression from this bunch of messy, disconnected, dissonant, rambling "songs" is that every single member of the band filled his innards with as much bourbon as possible, then avidly threw up on every single instrument and gadget, then recorded the album without even bothering to clear the vomit out of the speakers. Or something to that effect. The guitars are constantly out of tune, the drummer is constantly out of synch, and the volume level gives a very vivid impression of a busy groundhog merrily chewing on the knobs for lack of a better source of nutrition. Now d'ya get the picture?"

"And it's sort of fun."

It is fun indeed!

Golden Throats vol.1

Golden Throats Vol.1 - The Great Celebrity Sing Off.

Another "terrible covers by famous artists" compilation. This is the legendary one, though. The first one to deal with this nasty subject.

This album is like a serial killer making hostages in a primary school and slowly tearing up the pieces of little children. That's not even a metaphor, I mean that literally! For example, Sebastian Cabot's cover of "It Ain't Me Babe" is just dreadful, I don't even have words to describe what I feel for the people who actually recorded this shit.

"Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds"? Worthy of death penalty.
"House of the Rising Sun"? Heresy.

My favourite in dreadfulness is Mr. Tambourine Man, though. I don't know how to demonstrate the amount of horror in this version but showing you a picture of the guy who's singing(yes, he was a member of Star Trek):

"Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me."

The Seeds - Discography

At the same day Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett died, also died one of the key figures in the underground of rock n' roll of all times: Mr. Sky Saxon, vocalist and leader of The Seeds.

The Seeds is one of the most cherished (and obscure) bands of the 60's garagerock movement. They are mainly known by their two hits: Can't Seem to Make You Mine(that the Ramones covered) and Pushin' Too Hard(one of the friggin best rock songs of all times).

At first sight, they might seem a bit repetitive or amateurish, but if you turn your volume loud enough and, to quote one of their songs, "let yourself go": you'll understand why Jesvs Cristvs has such a special love for this band.

They released 3 main studio albuns. Two rough-and-straight garagerock records in 1966 and a hilarious attempt of sounding psychedelic(that i'm-not-sure-how worked!) in 1967.

1966 - The Seeds
Highlights: Pushin' Too Hard, No Escape and Evil Hoodoo. The three songs are basically the same but they all rock hard enough to transcend plagium. Can't Seem to Make you Mine is great too.

1966 - Web of Sound
Definitely the stupendou Up In Her Room, a 14-minute jam with ONE CHORD. Marvelous, one of my favourite songs ever.

1967 - Future

Flower Lady and Her Assistance and Fallin'. It's hilarious how they try to sound psychedelic but end sounding so amateurish that the record turns out to be great.

Golden Throats Vol. 4: Celebrities Butcher Songs of The Beatles

Following the success of our last post(the bizarre cover versions of On The Rocks Pt.1), I now present to you another pearl of musical failure: Golden Throats Vol.4 - Celebrities Butcher Songs of The Beatles.

Who would be dumb enough to mix the theme from Mission:Impossible with Norwegian Wood?! A cover of Michelle sang by a dutch prostitute?! Joe Pesci singing Beatles?!? A ridiculous dramatic interpretation of Lucy in The Sky? "Don't Let me Down" sang by a girl who probably killed a man?

Only a few of these covers are extremely bad, they are beatles songs afterall. As bad as these singers are, it's almost impossible to make a bad song out of a Beatles one. In that sense, we got to praise Telly Savalas for managing to transform Something into a kitschy sugary mess that would make even Jesus cringe.

This extremely FUNNY compilation ensembles the most bizarre and stupid covers ever made by well-known artists of famous rock classics. The Who - Live at Leeds Deluxe Edition

Rushed out in 1970 as a way to bide time as the Who toiled away on their follow-up to Tommy, Live at Leeds wasn't intended to be the definitive Who live album, and many collectors maintain that the band had better shows available on bootlegs. But those shows weren't easily available whereas Live at Leeds was, and even if this show may not have been the absolute best, it's so damn close to it that it would be impossible for anybody but aficionados to argue. Here, the Who sound vicious — as heavy as Led Zeppelin but twice as volatile — as they careen through early classics with the confidence of a band that finally achieved acclaim but had yet to become preoccupied with making art. 1 - The Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter

A melhor descrição é essa citação de George Starostin(crítico musical russo famoso na internet):

Bardos da idade média chapados de ácido tocando melodias em prol da natureza, de Deus e de minotauros. Um de meus álbuns favoritos de todos os tempos por razões extremamentes pessoas que não cabe comentar nesse espaço público(Martina, onde estiveres, saibas bem que nunca te esqueci).

2 - Giles, Giles and Fripp - THE CHEERFUL INSANITY OF GILES, GILES & FRIPP
Banda daqueles que formariam no ano seguinte o King Crimson. Robert Fripp e os dois Giles tocam, surpreendentemente, um som que em nada se assemelha ao Crimson pretensioso e pomposo que viria. Aqui a semelhança inevitável é com Kinks e com o humor britânico do Monty Python. Um disco curioso. (Apesar de Michael Giles estar vestido em um traje judeu temos evidências concisas que ele era, em realidade, católico beneditino fervoroso).

3 - United States of America - United States of America
Um dos mais criativos de psicodelia que nunca recebeu a devida atenção. A banda(United States of America) era formada basicamente de alunos universitários do curso de música, e sobre a direção do professor Jospeh Byrd(formado em "Música contemporânea e artes" em Nova Iorque) criaram este disco-experimento lindo.

Quantos discos de psicodelia você conhece que não usam uma guitarra sequer? Zero é a resposta pois esse é o único. A primeira faixa já começa com a voz sensual e pueril de Dorothy Moskowitz anunciando que o preço de ingressar nessa jornada é sua mente.

4 - Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes

If you are a brazilian rock fan, you obviously know this album by heart(and all of the other Mutantes's albums too). But if you're not from Brazil and you do not know Os Mutantes yet. I'll add no further comments.

5 - Family - Music in a Doll's House

Em 1968 os Beatles pretendiam chamar seu disco de "Doll's House", mas então, a banda Family lança esse álbum e os besouros são obrigados a mudar o nome do seu disco. O disco que teve o nome mudado ficou mundialmente conhecido como White Album e é um dos maiores de todos os tempos. O outro disco ficou completamente renegado e agora eu vo-lo reapresento. Na palavras de George Starostin:

Family's debut is smashing -in my opinion, the high points of this record would be enough to immediately place the band in the upper league of the 'artsy/psychedelic roots-rock' British bands out there.

6 - Silver Apples - Silver Apples

Um baterista e um maluco com infinitos sintetizadores criam o, supostamente, primeiro disco de música eletrônica da história. Hipnótico é a palavra-chave.
