Tom Tom Club - Tom Tom Club (1981)

Tom Tom Club was formed in the early eighties by Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz. You probably already know Tina as the mysterious-pretty-blonde-bass-player from the Talking Heads. Frantz is also a former member of the Talking Heads, although you probably don't remember him.

Tom Tom got really famous with the two big hits: Wordy Rappinghood and Genius Of Love. If you were a youngster in the early eighties, you probably will recall these two tunes.

Oh, boy. Weren't those the best times? Dancing in those good old discothéques until dawn? Oh yeah. Fun times.

Wordy Rappinghood is one of those songs you just can't stop listening to. Its chorus's lyrics might be one of the most poetic things ever written since the beginning of times:

"Ramsamsam a ramsamsam
Goediekoediekoediekoedie ramsamsam
Ajkaja jippie ajkajee
Ahoe ahoe a rikitsjie"

  1. "Wordy Rappinghood" – 6:27
  2. "Genius of Love" – 5:34
  3. "Tom Tom Theme" – 1:24
  4. "L'Elephant" – 4:51
  5. "As Above, So Below" – 5:22
  6. "Lorelei" – 5:05
  7. "On, On, On On..." – 3:33
  8. "Booming and Zooming" – 4:35
  9. "Under the Boardwalk" – 5:46
  10. "Lorelei" (Remix Version) – 6:17

The Fall - Perverted By Languages (1983)

One of the best records by one of the best bands in the world. Not really easy to describe, there's a certain postpunky moody but this is a Fall album, and you will never know what will come next.

If you're new to The Fall, bear in mind the keyword to their sound: Repetition. Yeah, great riffs repeating and repeating while Mark E. Smith sings his poetry with his bum-messiah voice.

You will probably hate it. But remember: Mark E. smith hates you too.

The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta (1980)

Ok, so I'm sick of receiving the same complaints over and over again.
"Why do you only post heterossexual music?"; "Are you people homophobic?"; "Where's gay music??"

For the last time: We are not homophobics. We like gay people a lot! We have always supported the gay movement. My dog is gay!

And to prove our gay-friendliness and open-mind, here's a trademark gay record: The Police's Zenyatta Mondatta. It contains the most beautiful gay anthems someone could ever write. In "Don't Stand so Close To Me" Sting. the lead singer, is not afraid to shout out loud with all the words that he doesn't appreciate women close to him. "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da" is pure poetry and was voted Gay Anthem of The Year in a 1981 BBC's poll. "Behind my camel" and "Canary in a Coalmine" carefully examinate the existence of homossexuality in the animal world.

It's a really good album, it's got reggae, it's got new wave, clever instrumentals. It may sound a bit dorky and annoying at sometimes, but it's okay. it's because they're all gay.

Track listing:

1) Don't Stand So Close To Me; 2) Driven To Tears; 3) When The World Is Running Down You Make The Best Of What's Still Around; 4) Canary In A Coalmine; 5) Voices Inside My Head; 6) Bombs Away; 7) De Do Do Do De Da Da Da; 8) Behind My Camel; 9) Man In A Suitcase; 10) Shadows In The Rain; 11) The Other Way Of Stopping.

The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads (1982)

Although most people probably think the only Talking Heads live release is Stop Making Sense, the fact is that there's an earlier, better live album called The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads. Originally released in 1982 on LP and cassette, the album chronicles the growth of the band, both stylistically and personnel-wise. The excitement of this material is palpable, and the muscular band rips into these tunes with more power than the originals in most cases. At this point in their career, Talking Heads were still basically an underground band; it was "Burning Down the House" that really thrust them into the mainstream, and Stop Making Sense documents their arrival as a more or less mainstream act. The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads captures a hungry band on its way up, performing with a fire that was never matched on later tours.

Captain Beefheart - Ice Cream for Crow (1982)

Another crazy man's album. This one is the last record made by the legendary Don Van Vliet, or, Captain Beefheart. If you're not familiar with him yet, well... I guess you're going to be a bit shocked with Ice Cream For Crow.

Although not as shocking as his famous record Trout Mask Republica(1968), this one shows a older and maturer Beefheart. Allegedly a schizophrenic and visibly not completely sane, he sounds like a dying pirate cursing his fellow shipmates here.

After this record, Beefheart left the music businness and went to live isolated somewhere in the californian desert. Some don't even know if he's still alive. Well, God bless that poor soul.

Frank Zappa - You Are What You Is

From Markprindle.com:

"I already owned cheap or free copies of Hot Rats, Uncle Meat, We're Only In It For The Money, Fillmore East June 1971, Apostrophe (`), Strictly Commercial (a "best of" compilation I didn't review here) and Shut Your Mouth With A Guitar, but all of them just made me feel.. Mmm, semi-interested. Like, I could tell that one day I WOULD be a fan because a lot of it seemed really smart, but that day just hadn't come. But You Are What You Is made that day come. The only reason I bought it in the first place was because I was digging through a bunch of cheapy CD bins where the deal was "Buy 9, get a 10th free" and I'd already found 9. I honestly didn't expect to like it at all, but the Moon was shining on Sagitarrius that day because it ended up being my ticket into a splendid world unknown. Suddenly I "GOT" Zappa! And I wanted more more MORE MORE!!!"

If that record made Prindle a Zappa-fan, it can make YOU too.

Roky Erickson - The Evil One (1981)

Roky Erickson is a lunatic. It's not even a metaphor, he's literally a complete loon. In mid sixties he was the leadsinger for the 13th Floor Elevators, the band that might have started psychedelia. That's a lot already, but it doesn't end here.

In 1968 he started acting weird and speaking nonsense stuff. Roky was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was sent to a mental hospital. From 1969 to 1972 he bounced from a sanatory to another receiving all kinds of wonderful treatments, such as this one:

Apparently all those lobotomies and shock treatments only made our dear Roky even more loonie. And this record, The Evil One, is its evidence.

Just look at those song titles: "Two Headed Dog", "I Think of Demons", "Don't Shake me Lucifer". I mean, you gotta be at least a bit crazy to write a slow romantic ballad entitled "I Walked With a Zombie".

Anyways, all those songs are pretty catchy and sound like postpunk meets psychedelic and heavymetal for a ride. It's pretty worthy, I promise.

Killing Joke - Fire Dances (1983)

In 1982, Killing Joke almost split up because their lead singer, Jaz Coleman started reading stuff related to occultism and Aleister Crowley. I don't know what's up with rock stars and Crowley's philosophy, but the two always find a way to get together.

Anyways, Jaz Coleman got convinced that the apocalypse was coming really fast and he disappeared to Iceland, where - he thought - he would be safe, because it is written in the Bible: "And then the Judgement Day shall come - and no creature shall receive My mercy. Pain shall be spread all around the earth. Except in Iceland, of course, who I like so much."

Waiting for the apocalypse is quite boring, though. So the rest of the band decided to fly to Iceland too and record a tribal post-punk album drenched in communist lyrics and great guitarwork. And It's darn good.

Setlist:
1 - The Gathering
2 - Fun & Games

Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil

One of the best brazilian albuns, surely one TOP10 record for my beloved country.
Jorge Ben mix samba with rock, funk with african music, mysticism with umbanda, and everything he could possibly imagine at the time. The result is such a colorful and fantastic experience that even Rod Stewart(yes, THAT Rod Stewart) has plagiarized one of his songs("Taj Mahal") in his song "Da Ya Think Im Sexy". As a result of the lawsuit, Stewart agreed to donate all his royalties from the song to UNICEF.
If you're interested in discovering Brazilian music, this record is a perfect start.

The Clash - Discography

The Clash is, we could say, the most intelligent band of the punk moviment and maybe wich has awakened the desire of mayhem and wear leather jackets in the boys. Their style wasn't common, punk rock mixed with rockabily, reggae, rap and ska. The band was great, they gone from underground until the top, when launched their masterpiece London Calling and later the greatest comercial sucess with the song Should I Stay or Should I Go. The group falled in many traps, drugs, internal feuds. Over time, they were disassembling bit by bit, until no one's left.

Should I Stay or Should I Go.

When the band's over, the integrants starting take care of their lives, in separate careers. In 1999, the most notorious member Joe Strummer was returned to the stages with his new band The Mescaleros, regenerated from the huge wound that the end of Clash left over him. Until in 2002 he died from a congenital heart defect.

I didn't upload the last album "Cut the Crap" because it's really bad. Now, the discography, beggining from the end.

JvCv's favourite They Might Be Giant songs

If you still haven't heard They Might Be Giants and you think you know something about pop music, you're completely wrong, my friend. TMBG are probably the best poprock band from late
eighties and nineties.
.
This compilation brings together all of Jesvs Cristvs's favourite songs from the band. Ranging from their first(1988) to their last album(2007) these wonderful pop melodies carry only two things in common: unlimited creativity and unlimited catchiness.
.
Undispensable for art and smart-pop fans.
.
1 - Bee of the bird of the moth
2 - My evil twin
3 - They'll need a Crane
4 - Put your hand inside the puppet head
5 - Don't Let's Start
6 - Birdhouse of the soul
7 - The Mesopotamians

Negativland - Escape from Noise (1987)

  1. "Announcement"
  2. "Quiet Please"
  3. "Michael Jackson"
  4. "Escape from Noise"
  5. "The Playboy Channel"
  6. "Stress in Marriage"
  7. "Nesbitt's Lime Soda Song"
  8. "Over the Hiccups"
  9. "Sycamore"
  10. "Car Bomb"
  11. "Methods of Torture"
  12. "Yellow Black and Rectangular"
  13. "Backstage Pass"
  14. "Christianity Is Stupid"
  15. "Time Zones"
  16. "You Don't Even Live Here"
  17. "The Way of It"
  18. "Endscape"

Experimentalismo e samples. Muitos samples.

Detalhe pra música “Over the Hiccups” – na qual uma menininha com soluço cantarola "Over the Rainbow", parodiando Judy Garland.

18 faixas que valem a pena serem escutadas. 42:12 minutos que valem a pena serem perdidos.
