-My favourite here is the last song. Booker T & The MG's instrumental version of I Want You (She's so Heavy). Powerful stuff, I tell ya.

Big Daddy - Sgt. Pepper's (1992)

Another Sgt. Pepper tribute album in less than a week, this is how previsible this blog is. Anyway, this won't be a problem since we all love hearing what people do to the Beatles's songs.

Big Daddy used to be a parody band from Los Angelos in the eighties. They were famous for playing well-known classics in 50's style. "When I'm Sixty Four" is now a doo-wop ballad. "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is turned into rockabilly. "A Day in The Life" sounds like as if it were made by Buddy Holly. And I love it all.

Big Daddy performing their version of the title-track on a german tv show. (skip to 1 minute):

Easy Star Allstars - Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009)

After famously covering Pink Floyd(I'll post this one tomorrow) and Radiohead, the infamous dub-reggae band goes to cover the biggest record of them all: the Beatles's Sgt. Pepper.

The whole thing is fantastic, even though they are just having a lot of fun, some of these covers even approach what is commonly referred as ART.

There is no bad song here, I mean, if you like REGGAE and DUB, because that's what it is. I was really worried about how would the "Within Without You" cover sound like, though. When I heard it, boy, was I surprised or what? It's GRATE! What about the "She's Leaving Home" version, then?

1. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" ft. Junior Jazz
2. "With a Little Help from My Friends" ft. Luciano
3. "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" ft. Frankie Paul
4. "Getting Better" ft. The Mighty Diamonds
5. "Fixing a Hole (Extended Dub Mix)" ft. Max Romeo
6. "She's Leaving Home" ft. Kirsty Rock
7. "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" ft. Ranking Roger
8. "Within You Without You" ft. Matisyahu
9. "When I'm Sixty-Four (Extended Dub Mix)" ft. Sugar Minott
10. "Lovely Rita" ft. Bunny Rugs & U-Roy
11. "Good Morning Good Morning" ft. Steel Pulse
12. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)"
13. "A Day in the Life" ft. Michael Rose and Menny More

On an unrelated note: Does someone know the meaning of life? If yes, please do tell. I'm getting tired of having to find it on my own. Thanks.

Golden Throats vol.1

Golden Throats Vol.1 - The Great Celebrity Sing Off.

Another "terrible covers by famous artists" compilation. This is the legendary one, though. The first one to deal with this nasty subject.

This album is like a serial killer making hostages in a primary school and slowly tearing up the pieces of little children. That's not even a metaphor, I mean that literally! For example, Sebastian Cabot's cover of "It Ain't Me Babe" is just dreadful, I don't even have words to describe what I feel for the people who actually recorded this shit.

"Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds"? Worthy of death penalty.
"House of the Rising Sun"? Heresy.

My favourite in dreadfulness is Mr. Tambourine Man, though. I don't know how to demonstrate the amount of horror in this version but showing you a picture of the guy who's singing(yes, he was a member of Star Trek):

"Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me."

Setlist:
1 - Leonard Nimoy - Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
2 - Sebastian Caboy - It Ain't me Babe (Bob Dylan)
3 - Eddie Albert - Blowin' in The wind (Bob Dylan)
4 - William Shatner - Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds (Beatles)
5 - Noel Harrison - A Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum)
6 - Frankie Randall - I Can See For Miles (The Who)
7 - Jack Webb - Try a Little Tenderness (?)
8 - Mae West - Twist and Shout (famously recorded by The Beatles)
9 - Andy Griffith - House of The Rising Sun (Traditional?)
10 - William Shatner - Mr. Tambourine Man (Bob Dylan)
11 - Jim Nabors - You Are The Sunshine of My Life (?)
12 - Sebastian Cabot - Like a Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)
13 - Joel Grey - White Room (Cream)
14 - Leonard Nimoy - If I Had a Hammer (?)

Golden Throats Vol. 4: Celebrities Butcher Songs of The Beatles

Following the success of our last post(the bizarre cover versions of On The Rocks Pt.1), I now present to you another pearl of musical failure: Golden Throats Vol.4 - Celebrities Butcher Songs of The Beatles.

Who would be dumb enough to mix the theme from Mission:Impossible with Norwegian Wood?! A cover of Michelle sang by a dutch prostitute?! Joe Pesci singing Beatles?!? A ridiculous dramatic interpretation of Lucy in The Sky? "Don't Let me Down" sang by a girl who probably killed a man?

Only a few of these covers are extremely bad, they are beatles songs afterall. As bad as these singers are, it's almost impossible to make a bad song out of a Beatles one. In that sense, we got to praise Telly Savalas for managing to transform Something into a kitschy sugary mess that would make even Jesus cringe.

............................Congratulations, Telly. You're the man.

1 - George Burns - With a Little Help From My Friends
2 - Joel Grey - She's Leaving Home
3 - William Shatner - Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds
4 - Telly Savalas - Something
5 - Mae West - Day Tripper
6 - Bing Crosby - Hey Jude
7 - Xaviera Hollander - Michelle
8 - Alan Copeland - Mission Impossible and Norwegian Wood
9 - Tennessee Ernie Ford - Let It Be
10 - Little Joe Pesci - Got to Get you Into My Life
11 - Brothers Four - Revolution
12 - Noel Harrison - She's a Woman
13 - Claudine Longet - Jealous Guy and Don't Let Me Down
14 - Theodore Bikel - Piggies

15 - Jan and Dean - Norwegian Wood
16 - George Maharis - A Hard Day's Night
17 - Various Artists - untitled

Ps: We still have other Golden Throats compilations(Vol. 1 and 2 are more laughable cover versions by celebrities, if you want it, ask for it in the comments)

Ultralounge - On The Rocks pt.1

This extremely FUNNY compilation ensembles the most bizarre and stupid covers ever made by well-known artists of famous rock classics. Most of these tunes are ridiculous easylistening versions of classics like "Light My Fire" or "A Hard Day's Night" directed towards the more square and conservative public.
Some versions are extremely laughable(Light my fire, Dylan's Quinn the Eskimo, Kink's Tired of Waiting For You) and some are even interesting(A sitar version of the Monkee's Daydream Believer).

1. Zacharias - Light My Fire (The Doors)
2. Mel Torme - Sunshine Superman (Donovan)
3. Martin Denny - Incense and Peppermints (Strawberry Alarm Clock)
4. Sir Julian - Green Tambourine (Lemon Pipers)
5. Stu Philips - Tired of Waiting For You (Kinks)
6. Peggy Lee - A Hard Day's Night (Beatles)
7. Mariano Moreno - A Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum)
8. Hollyridge Strings - Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis?)
9. New Classic Singers - As Tears Go By (R. Stones)
10. Al De Lory - Evil Ways (Santana)
11. Little Big Horns - Get Back (Beatles)
12. Lettermen - Hello, I Love You; Touch Me (The Doors)
13. Hollyridge Strings - Theme From Shaft
14. Julie London - Quynn The Eskimo (Bob Dylan)
15. John Andrew Tartaglia - A Day In The Life, I Am The Walrus (Beatles)
16. Lord Sitar (sic) - Daydream Believer (Monkees)
17. Wayne Newton - Love Grows (Where my Rosemary Goes) (Edison Lighthouse)
18. Henry Jerome - Aquarius (Hair)

Dub & Reggae Songs from the world

Although I've never been a great fan of the jamaican sound, I've done this dub&reggae compilation featuring such incredible individual songs that even one that does not like Reggae or Dub is going to find things of his interest. Enjoy.

1 - The Ethiopians - Engine 54
2 - Rico - Midnight in Ethiopia
3 - Serge Gainsbourg - Des Laids Des Laids
4 - Orchestra Baobab - Boulmamine
5 - Scientist - Miss Know It all
6 - Gnawa Diffusion - Ya Laymi
7 - Supereagles - Viva supereagles
8 - Ryukyu Underground - Tinsagu Nu Hana Dub
9 - Joe White - If I needed Someone
10 - Pendha Gidda - Bally Sagoo
11 - Ernest Ranglin - You Won't See Me
12 - Jah Wobble & the Chinese Dub Orchestra - L1 Dub

JvCv's World Greatest Mashups

"A mashup, bootleg or blend(also mash up and mash-up) is a song or composition created by blending two or more songs."

.
These songs are taken from two records. The first one is called Let It Beast and was made by Dj BC. They are mixs of Beastie Boys songs with Beatles's songs. Fantastic stuff. Next, I've selected 6 songs from the record Revolved, album made by a Touch-by-the-Hand-of-God called CCC. Hetransformed each song from the Beatles's album Revolver into something different. Genious stuff, a must listen.
.

.
On side B, I've put a variety of creative mashups ranging from David Bowie meets Deep Purple to Britney Spears meets Van Halen. Great interesting listens ahead.
